Just keep in mind that it is based on a movie that was rated R, which I think a lot of people forget. Yeah, I know it's not the movie, but it has a lot of the same themes and profanity that gave it the R-rating to begin with. I think they even have a warning in the theatre too. It really depends on the kid though. I would have been fine with it at the age of 6, but then again, I was seeing productions of Stop Kiss and Sunday on the Rocks when I was 10 and not thinking anything of it, so it really depends on what you think is best for your child.
And keep in mind that if your child is in public school, they probably know all the words said in the show anyway. But if they are the type of kids that would keep the rest of the audience from enjoying the show, please keep them away! Other than that, I vote enjoy the show!

When I first saw this statement in another thread, I thought "that can't possibly be right". So I looked it up on IMDB and found that it is.
The US seems to be the only country to have given the movie such a strict rating.

I have attended the Thursday matinees of Billy Elliot at The Victoria Palace, London, on a number of accasions and there are usually a few school parties there to see the show. I think the youngest of these parties has been about 10.
I have seen children going in younger than that with their parents but I have also seen some of them shuffling about in their seats looking a bit bewildered.
