Posted: 4/8/05 at 10:02pmIf you can only see one, go with THE WOMAN IN WHITE. I didn't really like MARY POPPINS, other than Laura Michelle Kelly. TWIW is great all around. Haven't seen BILL ELLIOT, though, so I really can't judge it. Hope this helps.

Best be quick, bronx. I'm in the same boat as you, and Billy Elliot and Woman In White are already sold out for the time I'm there.
Is G&D an option for you?

What is G&D?
The thing is that I will see all three of them but I don't know if these 3 women can go to 3 shows even though we're there 5 nights. My mother is loyal to Elton John and Andrew Lloyd Webber though I thought MARRY POPPINS was THE show to see. Is it not? Something about ebing a Disney AND Mackintosh production made me think it was the show of the century. These guys also want spectacle and "big" shows.

Posted: 4/8/05 at 10:12pmI can't believe I'm asking this but what were reviews like for MARY POPPINS vs. WOMAN IN WHITE? Which one is selling better?

I'm not sure about the reviews, but both shows sell out regularly.
BTW, G&D is GUYS AND DOLLS. It's being revived with Ewan McGregor and Jane Krakowski.

Oh, ok. No, no G&D. Sorry.
hmm
Any other people's opinions about this dilema?
re: Billy Elliot, The Woman in White, Mary Popppins#8
Posted: 4/8/05 at 10:40pmwell i would see billy elliot #1 because i love elton john's musical theatre scores and i think it has the least chance of the three to come to the us. woman in white is already planning a production here. so i would say mary poppins for number 2.

I would vote Billy as well. I'm STILL choked that I'm not seeing it.

Posted: 4/8/05 at 10:45pmGood point - also, the children in the cast will be out of the show after six months and replaced by new kids. It's British law. So this summer is the only chance to see one of the original casts.

Posted: 4/8/05 at 10:49pmOk, if we end up seeing 2 shows, the impression I'm getting is for WIW and BILLY. But . . . . . . MARY POPPINS?? hmmm grr why is this so hard!
re: Billy Elliot, The Woman in White, Mary Popppins#13
Posted: 4/8/05 at 10:51pmgo billy and mary. woman in white is coming to broadway. you can see it in the states.
re: Billy Elliot, The Woman in White, Mary Popppins#14
Posted: 4/8/05 at 10:54pmI for one detested Woman In White. if I want to take a nap I can stay at home. I found Mary Poppins to be magical.
re: Billy Elliot, The Woman in White, Mary Popppins#15
Posted: 4/8/05 at 10:56pmMARY POPPINS is also headed for Broadway.

Why did you detest WIW?
When is MARY coming to NY?

Posted: 4/8/05 at 10:59pmWhich is the biggest as far as spectacle and size?
re: Billy Elliot, The Woman in White, Mary Popppins#18
Posted: 4/8/05 at 11:05pmMary Poppins is definitely bigger as far as spectacle and size. And also as far as heart, story, music, and talent. Woman In White is very mediocre Andrew lloyd Webber. Trust me.. you wont miss a thing.

Posted: 4/8/05 at 11:10pmI just have this impression of Chitty and Mary Poppins being like Beauty and the Beast - superficial kid fluff. I could be wrong - it's just my preconception that's turned me off of them.

Posted: 4/8/05 at 11:16pmYou are right about Chitty and Beauty. But not about Mary Poppins. They really have created a wonderful musical that is not a copy of the movie and stands all on its own.. Do a google search of the reviews. A lot of them were right on.

Posted: 4/8/05 at 11:48pmThanks for the tip, DAME. I'll take your word for it and look for Mary Poppins tickets.

I have just seen WOMAN IN WHITE and MARY POPPINS in London.
Mary Poppins is all spectacle!
Woman in White is what musical theatre should be - dramatic plot, wonderful music, and great lyrics ( and recitatives). It has a soul!
I guess it depends on what you are looking for.
