I've read several times that Eddie Izzard plans to bring Victoria Hamilton back to Broadway (after their stint in "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg") in 2005/2006 in "MacBeth". HUH? I adore Eddie, but he has no classical theater experience, and this role is, as you know, huge. I think he's biting off more than he can chew. Do you agree? Who else do you think has done this kind of thing, and has it ever worked?
why would playing the scottish king be any different than playing Brian in "Joe Egg"? I get your point, but an actor's an actor...he has a great deal of experience..and if he can do stand-up comedy, anything else is a laugh....so to speak...
I think, I THINK he has done a Shakespeare play before, it may even have been Macbeth, and he received wildly mixed reviews for it, from effusive raves to furious pans.
He's an amazing comic, but I think he should stick to stand-up. Clive Owen - who did 'Joe Egg' in London before Eddie took over - blew me away! Eddie was just being Eddie. I really didn't get all the fuss about his performance.
i think Clive owen is a great actor too, but unless you know Eddie, i really don't think you can say he's just "being Eddie" whatever that means....and if you do know him, well then i guess you CAN say that... :)
lol. i meant he was being eddie the comedian in 'joe egg'.
i know, i was just funnin' ya...

I absolutely adore Izzard as a standup, but I also was a bit underwhelmed by his "Joe Egg" performance -- it really felt like he was just doing variations from "Dressed To Kill" and his other standup work (which would be fine in another play -- such as "Lenny" which I didn't get to see him do, but I understand he received very good reviews for).
Not sure what he'd do with Macbeth. The role regularly defeats some of the greatest classically-trained actors -- perhaps he could find a different spin on it because of his background that might prove successful.
I saw him in Lenny. Again, he was very funny, but mostly doing his standup thing. It was a memorable night though, as in the sex scene with Elisabeth Berkley he was naked and actually got a hard-on on stage. But he really didn't seem to care.
I'm sure Ms. Berkeley was thrilled
