I would love to see Vanessa Williams do it. I'd like to see her play either one but evidently she isn't interested in replacing anymore. She only want to create or re-create a role. Updated On: 2/11/05 at 02:20 PM

The Watkins play establishes race as an issue. The musical lacks a race consciousness (though ethnicity is another story, especially as far as the Hunyak is concerned). It's best that way. A black woman could easily play Roxie and still have a white husband. If the musical truly takes issue with "miscegany," then why isn't there some snide line of dialogue about Roxie sleeping with a black Fred?

Race simply shouldn't be relevant to casting for this show.

Especially since the costuming isn't even of the period.

Dorothy Dandridge would have made an AWESOME Velma had she been born twenty years later.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I think Dorothy's voice works more for Roxie.

I guess...but Dorothy did play Anita in WSS, same as Chita...

So they should play all the same roles?

Well..doesn't BeBe play all of Chita's roles? And Ann play all of Gwen's???

All I'm saying is that Dorothy could be a great Velma due to the dancing...and I'm sure she would have sang a great version of All That Jazz...

(As is my belief that if DD hadn't turned down Tuptim in K&I, she would have also been Anita in the WSS film...)

Okay...here is my take on Dorothy.

She did not have the best singing voice in the world (which is why her album was never released until 98 ), but she could sell the hell out of a song, which is why she was so popular in the Cabaret circuit. She was a performer who gave 195% of herself to whatever project she did.
I love her cd. I don't like some of the songs on there, but I love her smooth voice, as it was so calming.
I wish I would have seen her perform live. I bet that was a thrill.

And I would prefer to hear Dorothy over Gwen and Chita anyday...

Dorothy was a case where had she been born later, she would've been a huge star.

Sad thing is, Dorothy WAS a huge star back in her day. She was loved by many people, and had many fans.
But, when she died, everyone abandoned her, and her popularity vanished as soon as it had appeared.
She was almost forgotten.
But, yes...had Dorothy been born later, she would be bigger than Halle Berry...
