Blood Brothers Questions
Blood Brothers Questions#0

hey everyone
my high school is doing this show for the fall musical and i have some questions concerning the show itself, the music, and specifics about the roles. I know the plot so i just want views on the show as a whole.
How good is the show?/What are your thoughts on it?
What is the music like?
Which of the brothers has the better role (character wise) and which is a larger role?
What other male roles are there in the show?
What are the vocal parts for Mickey and Eddie like? (range, style etc.)
yeah i know i'm specific but i like to read up before auditions ![]()
thanks for any input!

I played keyboards for Blood Brothers about 3 years ago. It's a a really good show. The audience feedback was all very positive. The music isn't too exciting...there are basically about 4 different themes and every song is some variation on one of those themes. Lots of Reprises...like Marilyn Monroe, Easy Terms, and Shoes Upon the Table. But, hey, it works for the show. Nothing wrong with repeating music. It's sort of a rock musical.
Mickey definitely has a bigger role. He sings more and his character goes through the most changes. Other male roles: the narrator (he sings all the "Shoes Upon the Table" songs), and Mickey's brother (forget his name) - he has a decent part and sings a bit in "kid's game". I believe Mickey and Eddie both require tenor voices. It's been years since I looked at the vocal score, so I honestly don't remember the exact range. Eddie has some pretty high falsetto in "I'm not Saying a Word." I still have the score at home, but I'm on the road and won't be back home until June...
Hope that answered your questions. Let me know if you want to know anything else!

thank you thank you thank you
i thought no one would answer! lol
yeah im a tenor and i'm hoping for one of the brothers, i'll have to read up on whether Mickey is the one that gets really depressed...i dont know if i'll get Mickey (damn seniority, i'll be a sophomore when we do this and there's this senior who is decent) thanks for your input though, im looking foward to it a great deal, it'd be perfect for that senior and i to get the brother roles

I didn't think anyone would answer you either. That's why I registered just to reply to you. haha. You'll notice I just joined today. Been reading the board for a long time, but never post. Blood Brothers never seemed to become very popular in the US. It's quite a hit in London though.
Yes, Mickey is the one that gets really depressed. It's the more dramatic role of the two. Sorry about the seniority thing...although I know of several freshmen who have gotten a lead both in high school and college productions I've seen. Sometimes they do actually pick the talented people over the seniors. Good luck! let me know how it goes.

I love this show!
I didn't know they released the rights for schools. I would be extatic if my school did this. I would love to play Linda *starts working on Bristish accent*
Also, there are 2 other male parts that could be a good back up if you don't get Michey or Eddie. Mr. Lyons- He is Eddie's father by law. His part is a bit smaller but he sings in 'Take a Letter Ms. Jones' (my favorite song in the show) Not sure of his vocal range though. Sammy (Michey's brother who AM mentioned) is a small part as well but he is really funny. Sings abit in Kids Game.
Goodluck with everything!

Yeah, I forgot about Mr. Lyons. But it's a pretty small part. He only appears in a couple scenes. As far as singing in "Take a Letter To Miss Jones" - I don't really remember. It's quite possible that he does, although it's probably just one verse. And they definitely need an older looking person for that role. I don't know what you look like, but I'm guessing they wouldn't put a sophomore in that role.
The best male roles besides the brothers are definitely Sammy (Mickey's brother) or the Narrator. Everyone loves the narrator - it's a cool part.

Posted: 5/7/04 at 5:38pmThere's a thread about most emotional musical ending I think, well - Blood Brothers wins this prize ten times over. It is so emotionally draining and fantastic. If you think 'Wicked' had a 'sad ending' then.. well, Blood Brothers is like walking into a morgue.

Posted: 5/7/04 at 7:04pmI Know! When I saw it the cast didn't even smile at curtain call. I mean how could one smile after performing that ending?
