He is TERRIBLE! He is sing-talking throughout the entire thing. Not holding any notes. What a disaster!
Well the audience sure went crazy, as I'm sure they will do nightly at the Marquis. For chrit's sake, ITS ROBERT GOULET! I enjoyed his performance, Davis had it down to a marvel, and after only 2 weeks of rehersal, Goulet was lovely. Can't wait to see the ENTIRE performance!
I never realized how close Will Farrel's imitation of Goulet was. That's pretty impressive.
Ooh, I love Robert Goulet.
I just can't see it - he's 20 years too old and his voice is not what it used to be.He scoops up and down to the notes and he constantly goes up on lyrics and has GOT to stop dying his hair and eyebrows.
Vera, retire with Bob and all the grandkiddies, please. His time has come...and gone. I hear Richard Chamberlain has a nice condo set-up in West Palm Beach and one in Aspen.
No disrepect intended. I loved both his roles in Camelot! But when he hit 60, he needed to let nature take over and move on with dignity like others who own mirrors and tape recorders.
Mr. Goulet was sensational this morning on Regis. He looked wonderful and his voice was gorgeous and the AUDIENCE LOVED him! How wonderful to have a star of this talent and stature back on Broadway. No one has ever sang the part of Georges in La Cage on Broadway, as magnificentally as Goulet did this morning. Indeed, he is the first "real singer" to do the part on Broadway. I am somewhat surprised some folks here didn't care for his performance. But then again, that is why there needs to be and there is lots of stuff and variance to choose from. Different folks will very, very often enjoy and delight in different things.
I think it is great for La Cage and great for Broadway that Mr. Goulet is "throwing down the gauntlet"(how can I resist some reference to his Lancelot in CAMELOT?) and reclaiming his spot as a true Broadway star. Break a leg and Bravo Mr. Goulet!
Agreed, he really was quite a delight this morning and I hope everyone will see the show, or see it again. If you missed it this morning, catch him at the theatre.
You crack me up, LACAGE2. I didn't see his performance and I'm not saying he couldn't possibly be good. However. Shows like Regis have APPLAUSE signs and Gelman basically makes sure the audience goes wild over EVERYTHING. So ironic that he's connected to LA CAGE! Now, if someone performed from PIAZZA, even if the audience went wild - you'd probably say they weren't good. I just find it funny.
I hardly find Goulet's performance this morning to be the "definitive" version of the song. He was barely singing it.
baddadnpa & redhot both nailed it. Goulet's performance was a disaster. He looked as bad as he sang. Jean-Michel was the product of an affair Georges had 25 years earlier? Was this affair to celebrate his retirement???
I caught his appearance just before I had to run off to work. I couldn't believe how pathetically bad he was.
Mamie - I love your icon - To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my all time favorite books and films - LOVE IT!
Thank you! I wish I could find one of my own pics at that age. I actually did look like Scout.
That's not Scout. that's an actress.
Damn I missed Goulet, i hear he is again having trouble learning the lines.
I just saw a tape of his perofrmance. He was worse than I expected. I thought for a second he was doing a take off on Will Farells imitation of him. He scooped, he reached for notes! Yuck.
South Fl Marc - he's been doing that for 20-some-odd years now. Get the DVD of Broadways Love Songs - he sings This Nearly Was mine and screws up the lyrics then looks apologeticly at the audience and shrugs his shoulder and walks off the stage laughing to himself - its Horrendous for a famous performer of his stature to behave like that in a professional situation.

I hope when he actually does the show, he is able to stay with the orchestra. He was all over the place rhythmically, and his accompanist was doing his best to "follow" him.
It will be very interesting to see the reviews on his performance. If it is anything like what he delivered on Regis, I bet we will see another drama play out behind the scenes of La Cage.

I have a ticket for La Cage for a front row seat in July. Hmmm... can't wait. I had seen it a few times prior to the, er, casting change. I don't know if I'll see a wonderful performance - or a train wreck. I guess time will tell. :)
I think I might go back to La Cage too. It's been a long time since I've seen a really bad lounge act, and Grandpa Goulet has turned into one of the worst lounge lizards out there.
I wonder if they'll ask reviewers to come back.
I also wonder if they'll keep the kiss at the end of the show.
Theyre keeping the kiss. Its in the interview on Robs Blog. Goulet told Jerry Zaks "no open mouths." Glad he's really thinking about his acting up there.
That homophobic idiot.
If I was Gary Beach I would be the one insisting on "no open mouths". The thought of kissing GreatGrandpa Goulet - Yuck!!!!!!
