Bombay Dreams: US version vs. London version

I saw Bombay Dreams two years ago in London and LOVED it. Just saw preview in New York and was very disappointed by the changes. Has anyone else seen both productions? What do you think of the changes? Andrew Lloyd Webber was there tonight, so I went up to him after the show and asked why the changes were made. He seemed a tad defensive. I later read that he LOVES the changes and thinks the show is much better this way. Maybe he's just too close to it to be objective. I'm really curious about other audience members' reactions to this new version.
