My daughters and I make an annual trip into the city every spring to see a few shows and I'm looking for some recommendations. The girls are both theatre enthusiasts, ages 11 and 14, and we're already making plans to see Sister Act.
For those of you that have seen them, would you recommend Bonnie & Clyde or Newsies? Do you think Bonnie & Clyde will still be running?
(Last year we saw Memphis on my sister's recommendation. What a mistake that was!)
:) :) :)
I haven't seen Newsies, but at this point it looks like it may be your only option since the grosses for Bonnie & Clyde are really bad and will most likely close in January.
I would see Bonnie & Clyde.
Also: You can't judge grosses on how it is selling during previews, opening night is tomorrow!
Based on the info you have provided it is very hard to make any kind of suggestions.
Based solely on the age of your daughters I would suggest NEWSIES over BONNIE AND CLYDE, but if they have seen the movie of B&C and like it they may very well enjoy seeing how it translates to the musical stage.
What was it about MEMPHIS that you didn't enjoy? That might also provide us with a clue as to your tastes.
Here is a case where you let someone else suggest a show and you were disappointed. By asking strangers on this board (some of whom delight in steering people towards shows they will not enjoy)you are setting yourself up for further disappointments.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Also: Bonnie & Clyde is NOT based off the film in any way.
I saw both. How mature is the 11 year-old? If she's going to be freaked out by bloody violence, repeated, loud gun shots, then pick Newsies.
I can't really compare one over the other since they're pretty different. Overall though, I think Bonne & Clyde is the more exciting show.

I'm just wondering what one would recommend for a teenage girl, really. I think they're very mature- it's just hard to an appropriate amount of violence.
As for Memphis, it just fell flat. There was nothing about Memphis that felt new.
Maybe B&C will close in time for Jeremy to start Newsies rehearsals!
Bonnie and Clyde is very good. I really hope it succeeds. I haven't seen Newsies yet so I won't comment. I loved Bonnie and Clyde, though.

It really ticks me off when people wish for a show's demise, especially before it's even opened. Show some class, folks.
I agree...WDWFreak's comment makes me wonder what his agenda is.
As you note, the grosses shown for B&C are for previews...
As a side note: It's kind of interesting as a psychological exercise to go back over some of the negative, "snippy" comments that some people have made about various shows over the past few years and see that there are definitely certain folks that routinely post musings that, without any other logical explanation, would indicate that they might also be the types of people that attend an automobile race simply in hopes of witnessing a fatal crash. Sad.
There's a movie of Newsies! It's been out for the last 15 years...
Bonnie & Clyde is a great original work of theatre. New music and new stars.
If you're theatre fans, it'll be interesting for you to see a show about people out in the mid-west during the 1930's.
Also, I think this might be the first musical I've seen without big dance numbers, so take that into consideration before taking kids/ people with low attention spans.
I haven't seen Newsies but will be first in line after seeing their Thanksgiving day parade performance.
