Wow. NOW we all realize what a piece of **** the score is. All 3 other nominated Best Scores from last season were far superior. And all three were pastiche and did pastiche well, unlike the putrid winner.

Sorry if I sound bitter, but I saw MYTHS & HYMNS today and suddenly remembered what REAL theater music sounds like. Updated On: 2/5/12 at 09:15 PM

Personally, I really love the score- to me, it works extremely well as a comedic score. I still listen to it and find it pretty hilarious. And other than the overt reference to I Have Confidence, I don't think the score is as derivative as others seem to think. I mean, if having an "I Want" song makes a score less original, than most musical scores aren't that original.

I can't really compare it to Scottsboro Boys or Sister Act, but I think the score to Book of Mormon is just as good as Women on the Verge- both set out to do different things, and I think both accomplish them pretty well.

ETA: Of course, Hasa Diga Eebowai and I Am Africa are derivative of other song forms, but I think the use of pastiche in those cases is to make a pretty clear satirical point. Regardless, I neglected them initially.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Hasa Dig Eebowai does have a very clear satirical point. It tells the audience they're not in the commodified Africa of Disney, and that that version is a lie. That's good satire. I don't know what the satirical point of Sal Tlay Ka Sity resembling the Menken ballads so closely is. Okay, Audrey and Nabulungi are in similar-ish situations. Lots of characters in lots of shows are in vaguely similar situations. That doesn't necessarily warrant quoting each other.

But see, I listen to Sal Tlay Ka Siti, and I don't hear Somewehere That's Green. True, I don't know Little Shop that well, but I know the song and I just don't hear the similarity, musically. Sure, they're similar characters in similar situations, but it isn't as if Little Shop was the first musical to present a person in a terrible place wanting to get out. And on its own terms, I think Sal Tlay Ka Siti is important for the show as a whole. It- as well as Nabalungi's character, really- ground the show among all the craziness and give it some real heart.

jv92, I do not blame you for being bitter. I was personally pulling for sister act.

I can't say I was pulling for SISTER ACT, since I worshiped the ground THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS walked on last year, but I did enjoy that score very much. Menken's terrific.
