Boston Pops/Jerry Herman Tribute

"Evening at Pops" will air Part One of their tribute to Jerry Herman this week. In the NYC area, the program airs on PBS on Thursday (8PM). The cast includes Marin Mazzie, Faith Prince and John Barrowman--to say nothing of the dashing Maestro Keith Lockhart. Check your local listings.

This program was prompted by my suggestion to Keith Lockhart last year. He'd just conducted a wonderful Richard Rodgers Tribute at Tanglewood and I visited with him afterward. I mentioned that there had been many wonderful concerts in celebration of Mr. Rodgers' 100th birthday, but added that it would be refreshing to celebrate the work of a LIVING composer. Keith knows of my passion for TWHM and said, "You mean like Jerry Herman?". Of course I beamed from ear-to-ear and Keith gave me one of his twinkling smiles and mentioned that he'd look into it.

A year later, it's become a reality!

Yes, Keith is married--to Lucia Linn, who plays 1st violin with the Pops.

I've already suggested that the Pops feature TSMrW in one of their concerts. I probably won't see Keith until after the summer, but I'll make a pitch for the "Jarrod and Patrick Show".

BroadwayLady, you know I worship and adore you (from afar), but are you saying ANYTHING negative about Mr. Jerry Herman???? Remember, he did write TWHM--and you know how I feel about that!!!!!

Besides, there's a saying in the theater, "Men with big ears also have big ________."

I would love to join you and Dp for a get together on 10/24. On other boards, we always planned get togethers and it never came about. But, alas, Broadwaylady will be getting home from a trip to Italy the day before. Too tired from chasing all those Italian men to be worth my spit. Please include me next time. I thought the concert was great.


Ever time I see Jerry Herman though I think of an interview I saw him do years ago with Arthur Laurents and Harvey Fiestein. This was right before the opening of La Cage. Mr. Herman actually made the comment (and he was being serious) that Arthur and him were so glad to have Harvey write the book so there would be one gay amn involved in the project. Who did these two old queens think they were fooling? I think they both have come out since then but I'm not sure. But it was just so funny thinking that Jerry Herman thought he was passing as straight. Liberace was more butch.
