Hey Jay - have you seen a Lyric show before? Are they any good? Id love to see Speech and Debate. Is it pretty easy to find coming from NYC?

Yes. I saw THE SCENE last year at Lyric Stage. For a Regional Theater Company~its good! The seats on the theater are pretty decent too, no bad seats- The theater is like CIRCLE IN THE SQUARE with seats on RIGHT & LEFT side of the stage~of course its a small theater. Its easy to find.its on Back Bay-almost everything in downtown Boston is walkable from South Station (City Town Bus)

The usually cast local actors~which is not bad!

I've seen their productions of "Man of La Mancha," "Three Tall Women," "See What I Wanna See," and "This Wonderful Life." Maybe more, I can't remember right now.

Sometimes I am amazed and sometimes I'm not so impressed. Sometimes the acting/direction is incredible, sometimes not so much. I'd consider it on the lower end of the Boston regional theaters -- they do great stuff, but aren't as consistent as, say, Huntington, Speakeasy, ART, etc. Granted, they clearly have a lower budget and a much smaller and more intimate space (which they know how to use).

I do have to say, their season line-up is a lot more exciting than any other of the local regional theaters.

I love the Lyric Stage Company and manage to see at least half their season each year. I am so excited about Grey Gardens, Follies, and November (I missed seeing it in NYC and while no Nathan, I am still happy Lyric is tackling it).

Ticket prices are not bad, and as jaystarr pointed out ArtsBoston (or Bostix advance) often sells half-price tickets for all of the Lyric productions. Also, if you have a student ID, they do a student tix subscription package (6 tickets for $60ish) and rush ($10, one hour prior to curtain).

Their line-up is more exiting this year, walkedthroughmany. Though I did enjoy their recent productions of Man of La Mancha and Durang's Adrift in Macao (they had a talk-back with Durang the performance I went to).

Though Speakeasy is doing Jerry Springer: The Opera and the Light in the Piazza, so I am overall excited about the local Boston theater season this upcoming year.

jennamajig, I actually didn't have a great time at "La Mancha." Then again, I wrote a paper on its technical aspects -- so maybe I was too focused on the awkward lighting and set. At the same time though, I also felt that as a whole it focused too much on making moments comical instead of letting the humor reveal itself by playing scenes honestly. When the knights with the mirrors came out, for example, I started laughing -- I don't think I was supposed to. Or if I was supposed to, I was laughing for the wrong reasons. I just didn't feel the terror of the Inquisition at all. I thought the voices and music sounded great, though.

After so many Broadway Across America disappointments, I'm so happy to have a lot to look forward to in local theatre this season!

walkedthroughmany, I can see your points, especially on the technical side. I am actually not a huge fan of the show itself (other than "The Impossible Dream" and "Man of la Mancha" I find the score rather forgettable), so when I left the show entertained it was a win for me. Of course, I think a lot had to do with the actor performances. They were wonderful and Boston certainly had a flush of great local talent.

My love for the Lyric Stage comes a lot from the one show that surprised me there: Souvenir. My friend won free tickets to it and that was the only reason we saw it (had no interest in it or the story) and we loved it! The lead actress in it was absolutely wonderful and the story was far more interesting than we thought. Because of it, I always give shows at the Lyric a shot.

But I hear you on the Broadway Across America disappointments. I just hope if they find replacements for the gaps recently created we don't end up with another Whistle Down the Wind type-show touring through!
