Does anyone know if there is a quicker and cheap way from getting from Boston to New York City besides the Chinatown Bus for 15.00? If there is anything else let me know what and how I could obtain info for it. Thanks!

The Chinatown bus isn't the best way to go. It's what you get for 15 bucks one way. They pick you up and drop you off in Chinatown at no designated spot. It's not a fun ride, they tend to break down on the way and get lost sometimes.

I took the Greyhound, round trip for 56 bucks total. In and out of New York in one day. It's pretty comfy, and I left at 6:30, a half hour earlier bus because I got there early. I say it's worth the 16 extra bucks than the Chinatown buses. It drops you of in Port Authority, right next to Times Square. In Boston, it gets you at South Station.

When I went at the begining of the month, we got into the city in about 4 hours. Same coming home. Give it a shot, it's great transportation.

Now that I think about it I think it was 49 bucks round trip bus fare. Updated On: 7/24/06 at 12:33 PM

I went to school in downtown Manhattan and whenever I'd go home for the holidays, etc I'd take the Chinatown bus. It was closer for me being downtown than going up to Port Authority, and they drop you off at South Station in Boston (on Funh Wah). Sure, it's probably not the best way to travel, but for $30 roundtrip (for a year or so it was $20, it could be worse.

I've probably taken it a dozen or so times each way, and the only two problems I had were getting pulled over for speeding (coincidentally, after calling my mom from the road telling her what excellent time we were making), and the one time I took Lucky Dragon instead of Fung Wah, my bag was stolen. I never store stuff under the bus, but I brought a bunch of stuff home for the Thanksgiving break and had to.

But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

If you go to the Greyhound website, you'll see a little blue/red/yellow button that says e-Tickets. If you click that button and make your reservation there, a roundtrip ticket is $40. Ten dollars more, yes, but at least you get dropped off at Port Authority. The other option is to get a Student Advantage card. With that, I've made roundtrip Amtrak trips to NYC for as little as $76.

To get there any quicker than a Chinatown bus, you need a car!

if you don't mind spending a little money, take the train, it's just so nice and something I look forward to when I go to NY!

Greyhound all the way!!
I take the 6:30AM Express to NYC. I get there at around 10AM. I see a matinee and an evening performance and catch the 11:30PM bus home. I sleep all the way through CT. Last time I took it, it was $38, but it may have gone up since then. Just MAKE SURE you get the EXPRESS out of South Station. It takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes. Some non-Express routes take much much longer.....like 6 hours. Enjoy!!

I usually take Greyhound/Bonanza out of Providence Spring-Autumn. In the winter, I usually take the train in case of inclement weather.

It's a bit pricy, so sometimes we'll drive instead, but it's worth it. It's comfortable, easy, fast, and affordable, depending on your finances.

Yeah, as everyone has said, take Greyhound. I've taken both the train and greyhound...greyhound is half the price, end of story :)

Kind of on the same topic: I go to school in Boston and would love to start going to NY to see shows, but does anyone know of a good, affordable place to stay if I don't have friends/family there to crash with?

I, too, have done both Greyhound/Bonanza and the Amtrak train from Penn Station.

I prefer the train because it is faster. However, the bus is half the price. What do you want? Expensive and quick or slow and cheap? What will you sacrifice?

My favortie way to travel, which I find to be fairly inexpenisve is to actually drive to coonecticut, which takes roughly 3 hoursand take a 45 minute train ride from Connecticut to Grand Central. The train ride is very cheap ( about 20 round trip) from any station in Conn.

its roughly the same time and price as the chinatown bus, but it's nicer and it takes you closer to the city.

I always travel this way

I did the Greyhound/Peter Pan about a month ago, and it was well worth it. The trip is pretty smooth and convenient.
