Bounce

I'm considering buying a few Bounce coffee mugs and/or t-shirts at the Kennedy Center as collector items (if you've seen it, you know it isn't going to B'way). Anyone think this would be a smart idea?

I think we can venture that it probably isn't going to B'way since Nonesuch recorded the cast this week (75 min. of music) and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts's Theatre on Film and Tape Archive will film the show this weekend.

Plus, it isn't a great show and it's been 10 years in development. I imagine Sondheim and Weidman will now be concentrating on the B'way mounting of Assassins instead.

(Making Grumpy face) It seemed very interestingly flawed. And how awful could it really be with Michelle Pawk and Richard Kind? And Creel never made ANY impression on me in MILLIE (is 'male ingenue' a proper category? Because that was him) but I would be interested to see how he came off in this.

I'm especially sorry to miss Kind, as everyone I spoke to said he was truly wonderful in the part - the best thing in it. And had BOUNCE come to New York, he might have given Hugh Jackman serious competition.

Master, BOUNCE is interestingly flawed. It's entirely salvagable. I think Prince pointed them in the right direction but ultimately he confused the tone of the piece. Weidman needs to do more work on the book too. But I wouldn't be surprised to see some regional theater take the same show that is now at the KennedyCenter and give it the right production and the reviews will much better. I think Prince's wrong headed and sometimes sloppy direction (sadly for I love his work usually), the weak choreography and the performances of Herndon Lackey and Howard McGillin are the biggest problems with the current production. I don't think Kind's excellent performance could challenge Jackman for the Tony. If Kind were playing against an exciting actor to deepen the brother scenes and if the scenes with Creel (who is charming) were better developed, he might though.
