I was shocked when Marian Seldes and other members of the cast "broke up" a few times in EQUUS when it starred Richard Burton. I was seated on the stage (if you saw the original production you understand--they sold seats on the stage to students who were kinda supposed to represent a jury in a way--it was amazing having Burton "right in your face.") At the time I was getting the impression Burton was cracking them up with the delivery of some of his lines. But them laughing at all was certainly out of character and place and I am still stunned that it happened in EQUUS.
