So last night I went to this Brian Stokes Mitchell concert because frankly it is hard for me to pass up a chance to see this wonderful performer (and it was being held at my own school). He did not let down.
He started the evening off with "Some Enchanted Evening" and I felt like it was one of the best versions I have heard him do. The purity of his voice is just so refreshing. And of course he did "Wheels of a Dream" which was beautiful as always.
One thing I love about Mitchell (this being the second concert of his that I have attended) is how he is so personable with the audience sharing stories from his childhood, his career, and pretty much whatever he feels like sharing.
He also did a beautiful Ahrens and Flaherty song from The Glorious Ones ("I was Here"). One of the highlights for me was when he talked about South Pacific and his experience with that show and continued to do "This Nearly was Mine" without a mic (or as he called it... a cheater). It was so beautiful and the sound of his voice filled the whole theater (and I was in the last row of the theater too).
Overall it was a great night. He chose a wide variety of songs that kept the audience enthralled at all times.
This is definitely one performer that I cannot wait to see on Broadway!

Stokes is always good for a good concert.
His cabaret act at LCT a few years ago was very enjoyable. Especially his interaction with the audience.

Posted: 2/16/08 at 11:33pmI was there last night as it was across the street from my college, and he was great! Such a class act, a through and through performer. So much of everything -- standards, broadway, etc. So happy to have seen him at McCarter, just wish I would have had cash on me (only had the Credit Card) so I could have picked up one of his signed CDs.
