To add on to Margo, actors who cover, swing, or understudy:

They usually have two options: they can take their normal weekly plus 1/8 extra per performance, or they can take 7/8 of their weekly plus what the performer they are covering for would get paid for that show. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule. But, most choose option 1 (as it usually is a better salary). Does that make sense?

Also, andrew, I have a few friends on the les mis tour, and (at the very least) thenardier and eponine are not pink contracts. Were they, really at one time!? I'm surprised AEA ever let them get away with making those non-white contracts!!

When actors appear in more than one role in a musical (or as someone said "Eponine" and also one of the whores in the ensemble) it's usually because she is on a chorus production contract (pink). I'm not sure WHY producers would rather sign people to chorus contracts, as opposed to principle. Maybe that's changed over the years, but I speak from personal experience on this (although it's been a while, admittedly).

For example, I know that for the OBC of Big River, there were only TWO principle contracts: Huck and Jim. Everyone else was on a chorus contract, because they played a role, plus appeared as "ensemble" somewhere else in the show.

i am so glad that they changed it..i think marius, cosette, enjolras and eponine should also be white contracts though! i would take any contract to be in les miz..but thats besides the point.

also, actors are paid for one sick day a month. otherwise, they lose 1/8 of their salary per show...

lastly..understudies can negotiate to make more when they go on. the minimum is an extra 1/8 of the weeks salary...when i understudied my agent got me a lot more!! go agent!
