Watch this clip of Ethel Shutta doing Broadway Baby in Follies. It starts at the 2:55 mark. It's a master class in how to sell a song. I wish there were more on Broadway like her today.

Goth, I liked Shutta better before she got quite so broad. (Is it really necessary to kick the cat? LOL)
But in all the films of the original production, I love how the performers know they are working with very smart material, but nobody acts like he thinks he's doing High Mass.
I lived for the moment when she kicked the cat.
I wish more women who sing this song would kick their cats.

I thought it was funny when she kicked the cat.
I think the "broadness" of the acting is what vaudeville was about. They never thought they were creating high art, they were just trying to get people to have a good time. And kicking the cat is a sight gag intended to get a laugh.
I think that's what I miss in today's shows. Everyone seems to stand around and sing. There aren't many actors on Broadway who bring a physicality to the song like you see here.
