Thought this might be of interest to some of you...

Here's what we're working on for tonight's CBS Evening News...
HOLLYWOOD ON BROADWAY: Dateline: New York: It's the latest trend on Broadway... big Hollywood films making their way to the New York stage. Dozens of films, from The Wedding Singer and Moonstruck to Rocky and Rain Man are being developed in Broadway shows. We'll take an inside look at how the Great White Way is mounting stage versions of popular films to bolster their box office.

The "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" airs tonight at 6:30ET/5:30CT.

RAIN MAN on Broadway? Seriously?

It's coming on soon here - they are definitely talking about Mary Poppins for those interested in that show.

Here's the script to the story, in case you missed it...

ANCHOR LEAD: Now ... a story ... basically about the shoe being on the other foot. It used to be movie fans eagerly awaiting the Hollywood adaptation of the favorite Broadway musical.
But now... it's Hollywood feeding Broadway. Dozens of films, from The Wedding Singer and Moonstruck to Rocky and Rain Man are in development as Broadway shows. With a $12 million start-up cost ... producers want to minimize all the risk they
can ... so they pick titles audiences are familiar and comfortable with. But while the risk may be great ... so can the reward. That's why Disney and M-G-M are two of the Hollywood studios which have created "theatrical" units ... to produce or
license their vast catalogue of films for the stage. With more... here's C-B-S's Anthony Mason.
-----------------------------------
NARR: IT MAY BE CALLED BROADWAY ... BUT IT'S LOOKING MORE AND MORE LIKE A HOLLYWOOD MULTIPLEX.... WITH A FLOOD OF NEW MUSCIALS BASED ON MOVIES ABOUT TO OPEN.
- "CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG" PREMIERES IN APRIL
- TICKETS JUST WENT ON SALE FOR "SPAMALOT" BASED ON A MONTY PYTHON FILM:
- AND SETS ARE GOING UP FOR "DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS," BASED ON THE M-G-M MOVIE:

{SOT DARCIE DENKERT/President, MGM On Stage}: "We have 30 projects in development."
(15:11:22)

NARR: DARCIE DENKERT HEADS "MGM ON STAGE" WHICH BESIDES "SCOUNDRELS" IS ALSO DEVELOPING "LEGALLY BLONDE," "GET SHORTY," AND THE OLD VINCENT PRICE HORROR FILM "THEATRE OF BLOOD."

{DENKERT: "I think what attracts audiences to these titles is that the know they are going to be entertained." (#2/ 15:27:35)

NARR: ONE OF DISNEY'S ALL TIME FAVORITES...

(Nat sot/ "mary Poppins"): "Supercalafragalisticexpealadocious!"

NARR: JUST OPENED ON STAGE IN LONDON. BUT EVEN FOR A POPULAR TITLE LIKE "MARY POPPINS"... THE STAKES ARE HIGH:

(SOT THOMAS SCHUMACHER/ President, Disney Theatricals: "ten million, eleven million, twelve million dollars to mount a show." (20:57)

NARR: THOM SCHUMACHER HEADS DISNEY'S THEATRICAL UNIT, created after the phenomenal success of "Beauty and the Beast." BUT WHEN A SHOW FAILS, SCHUMACHER SAYS, THERE'S NO WAY TO RECOVER THE LOSSES:

{SOT SCHUMACHER: "You either make it or you don't." (21:07)

(ON CAMERA Mason in NY): AND 80% OF MUSICALS DON'T MAKE IT. MORE THAN EVER BROADWAY IS A "RISKY BUSINESS" NO, THAT'S ONE FILM TITLE THAT'S NOT ABOUT TO BECOME A MUSICAL. BUT YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED WHAT IS:

(SOT MICHAEL REIDEL / NY Post Theater Critic): "
REIDEL: "I know, for example they're going to make Spiderman into a Broadway musical.)

NARR: MICHAEL REIDEL COVERS BROADWAY FOR THE NEW YORK POST:

(SOT Reidel) I can't see Spiderman fitting into the great tradition of "Carousel" and "My Fair Lady."

NARR: IN THE END ... OF COURSE ... A HOLLYWOOD PEDIGREE IS NO GUARANTEE OF SUCCESS:

(nat sot/ "The Producers"): "I wanna be a Producer."

NARR: BUT WITH SHOWS LIKE "THE PRODUCERS" SETTING BOX OFFICE RECORDS, MORE THAN EVER HOLLYWOOD IS SINGING BROADWAY'S TUNE. ANTHONY MASON, CBS NEWS, NEW YORK.
