Broadway Grosses February 14-20

Well, the winter freeze seems to be thawing -- every show was up this week! All but three shows had attendance figures of at least 70%. Good Vibrations is still struggling at 57.4% and a $348K gross. A very good week for Febraury.

The only reason for the spike in attendance was because of President's Day Weekend.
Things will be fairly slow for awhile.

This week is also traditionally a good week, as kids are off from school. Between the generally mild winter, international tourism due to the weak dollar, additional tourists coming to town for The Gates, most Broadway shows seem to be weathering the winter pretty well -- even Brooklyn and Good Vibrations.

What I'm wondering is how much the audience for... less-than-wonderful musicals can be diluted before there aren't enough people to go around. All Shook Up has yet to open, after all. Or maybe that audience is unlimited and I'm just deluding myself.

I'm just elated that great shows like "Brooklyn Boy" and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" continue to do very, very well (82% and 80% capacity, respectively).

Well, I think GOOD VIBRATIONS will be gone by spring, but BROOKLYN is a totally different story - they're just trying to prove everyone wrong and hang on for as long as they can...we'll see if they can make it until the Tony's (not like they'll be nominated for anything.) As far as ALL SHOOK UP, I know that the first preview was completely sold out - pretty impressive for that giant theatre. We shall see...

Remember DRS is still in previews. If the reviews that come out after it opens next week are half as good as I think they'll be, it'll be doing a LOT better than 80% in the future.

Margo, do you think that subject matter and adult jokes/situationa will keep DRS from the box office highs enjoyed by HAIRSPRAY, WICKED, etc? I know THE PRODUCERS has still done very well, but I can't imagine many families going to DRS.

It's unclear right now, but you might be right. Family-oriented shows do tend to better, though The Producers and Chicago are obviously current exceptions to that and, in the past, A Chorus Line and Oh Calcutta both ran over a decade each despite adult-oriented subject matter.

If DRS doesn't win the best musical Tony, I wonder if it'll suffer a fate similar to Yazbeck's first show, The Full Monty -- a respectable two year run plus a tour, but not a blockbuster.

Wow, Rent is up by by 19.6%. Congrats to them.

Also, Movin' Out's up 13% and Democracy is up by 10.2%

Even more amazing - a show that is on its what- 17th year ? - on Broadway ( Phantom of the Opera) is still doing at 95 %capacity. Although ALWebber said in a recent interview that the movie must have helped the increase in box office business for the stage version.

Lets hope the upcoming RENT movie does the same for the ever-so-often anemic BO. And THE PRODUCERS will do just speldidly!

The Rent movie is going to be wretched. It's going to be directed by Christopher Columbus who directed such "masterpieces" as Stepmom and Bicentennial Man, and managed to suck the magic right out of the first two Harry Potter movies.

I wouldn't say the Rent movie is going to be wretched- just rather pedestrian. Columbus doesn't tend to make awful, stinking bombs- he doesn't take enough risks for that.

"Good Vibrations" may not be doing well box office wise...but look at how high the average ticket price for that show is. You'd think they'd offer a few discounts to get people into those seats.

You're right. It's silly to play to half full houses. They should go to heavy discounts (though word-of-mouth is just not good on this show).

There have been four movies of LITTLE WOMEN and that's doing some crappy business. Timing is everything, I suppose.

Does anyone else pick up on how schizo Rent is when it comes to the grosses? I've never seen a show have such big jumps and drops so often.

Actually, Little Women is doing better than I anticipated. I'm sure it's paying for itself every week. Given that the Virginia Theatre is never in hot demand, I'd imagine it could run for a while.

Canada: Seriously, RENT is always all over the place. I'm just happy it's still going strong after 8 or so years.
