Wow - gotta love Spring Break when virtually every show on Broadway is playing at high 80s-100 percent capacity.

Great week, pretty much across the board.

"Well" is not too well, though.
"Ring of Fire"--Yikes! Can it last much longer?
DRS went up! yay!!

"WELL" just started previews, so I wouldn't expect it to be doing great. But "RING OF FIRE" has already opened --- I don't see it lasting too much longer.
The ring is slowly closing on "Ring of Fire"
I forgot it was spring break when I went to the matinee of Rent yesterday. There were so many people there I just couldn't believe it. Nice to see the show doing well, even if I don't know about some of the casting.
Even if Well is only in previews, it opens in just 10ish days. It needs to pick things up. Even with good reviews, I don't see how it could run for longer than a couple of months. I would think a lot of people who would like to see it already did a year or so ago at the Public. I missed it during that run and will try to catch it now though.

Very few new plays without major stars run for more than a few months anyway, including plays that win the Tony or the Drama Desk. There just isn't a huge audience for non-musical plays anymore, unless a movie star is billed above the title. Producers Liz McCann and Scott Rudin certainly know this, but believe in the play and that it deserves the wide exposure that comes with a Broadway run. I sincerely doubt they expect to make a fortune from WELL and are quite prepared to lose a significant amount of their investment (they're both extremely wealthy individuals), but are hoping that maybe it'll catch on with audiences. If it doesn't, there's no shame in having supported a terrific work of art that they were passionate about.
Margo, how long do you expect Well to stay open for?

No way to predict at this point. We'll have to wait till the reviews come out, how it does Tony time and whether word of mouth helps.
I will say that it's very rare for a new play without an identifiable star to run more than two or three months. I AM MY OWN WIFE managed to run nearly year, but even with the benefit of a Pulitzer and Tonys for Best Play and Best Actor (and minimal weekly running costs given it was a one person show), it never made back its investment. Same with GOLDA'S BLACONY (another solo show that ran a long time without recouping). However, Sarah Jones has recouped and she's not a "name." Then again, you can't really compare WELL with a cast of six to a low cost solo show.
I suppose it's debatable whether Cherry Jones (or Eileen Atkins) is really a "star" -- though she's obviously a much bigger name in Broadway circles than Lisa Kron -- but thanks to great reviews, a Pulitzer and great word of mouth, DOUBT is a huge hit. Not sure if WELL will have that kind of wide appeal, but we'll see.
I'm going to the city in Aug. What are the chances it will be open then (assuming it gets good reviews, gets nominated for best play but doesn't win)

It's really not fair to even speculate on it at this point. It JUST started previews and there are several factors that determine whether it will have a long run or not -- factors that haven't even come into play yet. Wait and see.
Was it crowded when you were there?

The orchestra seemed mostly full.
Oh cool. Is the theatre big. I can't remember from Woolf if it was big. But I may be going on Monday (if I can get rid of my dumb Altar Boyz tickets) so I'll report back then.
