what i don't understand is how some of these are considered "lost treasures"...
my question- how many numbers did chicago do at the tonys- since they had gwen and chita on the first installment
I was thinking the same thing about Chicago -- maybe that's one of the DVD extras!
Of course I am too excited about Patti! LOVED her as Reno

Well, to clarify about the first one: the majority of those numbers were done in medleys to "salute" the composers, or the anniversary of the Tonys, or whatever. Verdon and Rivera didn't do "Nowadays" the year the show was nominated -- that snippet was from 1986 or so, during a tribute to Kander & Ebb. That year, they also "tributized" Herman, Sondheim, and someone else, I think.
What I found interesting on the first one were the numbers taken from the Tony telecasts the year they were nominated -- done in the original context of the show. How interesting to see Bonnie Franklin do the title number of APPLAUSE, or to see Grey's take on the Emcee prior to making the film, or, for God's sakes, to see Barbara Harris in THE APPLE TREE?!?!?! That crap with Zero Mostel and Carol Channing, etc. doing their greatest hit -- and no, that's not a typo -- bored me to crocodile tears.

Oh I know!! Zero Mostel did the "If I Were a Rich Man" w/o the classic Tevye beard! I was like... Tevye not a Jew? wtf...
Looking fwd to this immensely

Still no Dreamgirls?
Still no Follies or Company?

Dame - I don't think they'll release the Dreamgirls rights because of a pending revival.

Stick To Priest:
I don't think that "Company" or "Follies" did musical numbers on the Tonys in their respective years. From the Tony Awards website:
1971 (25th Annual Show) --
"This year's theme was a unique retrospective of highlights from 25 years of Tony-winning musicals and the stars who introduced them.
Opening Number - "What's Happening at the Palace"
Saluting 25 Years of Tony Award-Winning Musicals - Finian's Rainbow; High Button Shoes; Kiss Me, Kate; South Pacific; Guys and Dolls; The King & I; Wonderful Town; Kismet; Can-Can; The Pajama Game; Damn Yankees; My Fair Lady; The Music Man; Redhead; Fiorello!; The Sound of Music; Bye, Bye, Birdie; How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying; A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum; Hello, Dolly!; Fiddler on the Roof; Mame; Man of La Mancha; Cabaret; Hallelujah, Baby!; 1776; Applause.
Finale: "There's No Business Like Show Business" - Entire Company"
1972 --
"Special Tony Awards were presented to Ethel Merman and Richard Rodgers. A dual musical salute was the highlight of the evening's entertainment.
Musicals represented: Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death ("Put A Curse on You " -Company); Jesus Christ Superstar (Medley - Jeff Fenholt, Yvonne Elliman and Company); No, No, Nanette ("You Can Dance With Any Girl"- Helen Gallagher and Bobby Van/ "I Want To Be Happy" - Ruby Keeler and Company). "
What's really odd about that ceremony was the nominees for Best Musical that year were "Follies," "Grease," "Ain't Supposed To Die A Natural Death" and "Two Gentlemen of Verona" (which won). Assuming the Tony Awards website is accurate and complete, that means only one of the four nominated musicals ("Ain't Supposed To Die A Natural Death") got to perform that year. "Superstar" wasn't even nominated, but got to do a medley and "No, No Nannette," which was a big hit revival at the time (before the Tonys gave out awards for revivals), got to perform even though it opened the previous season (it won four Tonys at the 1971 ceremony in which "Company" won for Best Musical, but didn't get to perform). I guess back in those days, the Tonys were more than just a commercial for the current Broadway season.
However, with a little more research, I just discovered that at the 1975 cerermony, which was a celebration of the Winter Garden Theatre where the Awards were held, Alexis Smith did "The Story of Lucy and Jessie" from "Follies." At the 1977 ceremony, Millicent Martin, who was starring in the revue "Side By Side By Sondheim" did "I'm Still Here," also from "Follies." I'm not sure, but I believe Larry Kert sang an excerpt of "Being Alive" during a tribute to Sondheim and Kander & Ebb at the 1984 ceremony and again (in a tribute to 11:00 numbers) at the 1989 ceremony. The 1986 ceremony included a tribute to 40 years of Show music that included songs from "Follies" and "Company."
On a side note, there was a PBS special back in the 80's hosted by Tom Bosley called "The Best of Broadway" that featured Alexis Smith doing a heck of a version of "Could I Leave You?" from "Follies" (a great special by the way -- Chita Rivera did "All That Jazz" and "The Shriner's Ballet," Glynis Johns did "Send In The Clowns," Ray Walston did "Those Were The Good Old Days," Mary Martin did "Never, Never Land" and "Do Re Mi," Ethel Merman did "They Say That Falling In Love Is Wonderful" and "There's No Business Like Show Business" ....... plus so many others).
COMPANY never did a TONY's telecast. The year they did the tributes to shows was the year COMPANY was out. Therefore they never got to do a musical number.
