Hey theatre-folk! :)
So this weekend I went to the Rock Hall and Museum here in Cleveland just cause some friends work there and got me in for free and I was waiting for them to get off work...
they have this AMAZING Tommy exhibit right now including an hour long movie in their big theatre with interviews, etc. on the transition to Broadway, it was amazing. Lol, I felt like such a dork when people like Michael Cerveris and Sherie (Renee) Scott were interviewed and I'd get all excited and look around and everyone else is like "???" lol. ps. I DEFINITELY recommend it if you're in or will be in the cleveland area, it's awesome!
Anyways, I got to thinkin' - why isn't there a Broadway museum or hall of fame or something? I think it'd be amazing, and would deserve to be in New York - has this been tried before? Is there one in existence I'm just unaware of? Would it just be a waste cause no one would care?
After seeing the Rock Hall and it's Museum I was really really bummed that the theatre community doesn't have something like that, what does everyone think?
Mostly just curious as to why there isn't one already...
none to my knowledge but geez that would be interesting!
I don't do museums, but a broadway one I would definitely check out.
I would go if it was in NY...

That is a really great idea! If anyone knows any rich people into Broadway, tell them to build a museum!
That would be amazing. There is a theatre museum in London which I like a lot.

Isnt there a Hall of Fame thing at the Gershwin?
The Museum of the City of New York currently has a wing devoted to Broadway. RENT costumes are even on display.
Another reason why I would like to revisit New York... but an altogether theatre-related museum would be fantastic.

I agree. Thanks for the idea. :)

The one in London is really cool! They have this corridor painted white and all over the walls are hand prints. Each hand is from a different actor who has appeared on the west end Judy Dench, Julie Andrews, Ron Moody... was really cool!
I had a grand idea for it before Disney came along . I thought a great idea would be to renovate the New Amsterdam & put in in there
Since that is taken, we could use the same basic premise but put it in a theater which is a hard luck theater, off the beaten track or is simply too outmoded ( bathroom/lightinging facilities etc) to continue use. Some of my choices would be:
The Belasco
The Lyceum
The Longacre
The Cort
The Hudson - Probably the best as it is more centrally located & seems to be the best of the lot. Trying to convince the owners who want to continue to milk these theaters might be harder. Dangle a tax writeoff etc & you may get their interest

That would be really cool.
It would be yet another reason to visit New York.
They would have to drag me out at closing time...
This was a very long time ago, but there was a small museum in the Times Square district devoted to Broadway. I remember visiting it in 1980. I think it was run by the Museum of the City of New York. The day that I went I was the only one in there. I can recall costumes, a video presentation, and a few other things. Evidently, it didn't attract many visitors.

I remember that museum! It was on the street level of the Minskoff Theater! I recall 18" figures of Broadway stars in their greatest role. I kept going back because just looking at the Carol Channing figure in the red Dolly gown always made me feel good.
Dolly, you're right. I had totally forgotten about those figures.

I think this is a great idea... a broadway museum, and possibly even a hall of fame type of deal. I was hoping that there was a hidden one I didnt' know about that I could see at my visit. Maybe in the future... --korenglish
Another part of the museum would be audio recordings of the 100's & 100's of scores written but never produced. It would give a lot of work to out of work singers. You could also have, for the great unwashed masses, a hookup to Lincoln Center where anyone could watch what was in their archives. I even have some memorabilia I would contribute such as a mint condition program from a 1920's version of the Ziegfeld Follies fron the New Amsterdam. An old friend of mine from my old theater hopping days gave it to me long ago
