Broadway Music Downloads...(LEGALLY)

Okay I dont know if this is for the "off topic" but it does have to do w. Broadway.

My partner bought me a Sony Mp3 player for my birthday. I have been told that you can download itunes on anything other then an ipod. If this is the case, is there another download site that is as good as itunes website that I can download showtunes and stuff....

There might be some free software online that allows you to convert your iTunes .mp4 into .mp3s.

The newest version of Windows Media Player has a store. So does MusicMatch Jukebox. They all work the same way as itunes. Or...I use SoundTaxi Software to easily convert downloads to the format you want. It costs about $15 but it converts about ten times more quickly than the free programs.

If you're a student and have a .edu email address, you can get unlimited free music from Ruckus until you graduate. It works the same as the others stores. But you can only play it on your computer. To burn a disc or transfer to your player you must run it through a converter just as you would with itunes stuff.

I use eMusic.com a lot. It's not as good as iTunes because it only offers music from indie labels. However, it's cheap - I only pay $10 for 40 songs a month, so that makes up for the limited choices. Plus, it's in the mp3 format.

So if you want to download an album that's released by PS Classics, Sh-K-Boom, Ghostlight, or DRG (and a few other indie Broadway labels that have slipped my mind) you might want to check out eMusic.

You can convert/import music into iTunes as .mp3 in iTunes itself. No extra software is needed. I'm not any kind of computer savvy and I find myself showing others how to do this often; I'm surprised more people don't know. In iTunes, go to Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Importing->Import using: and change it to "MP3 encoder." When you import a CD it'll import as an .mp3 rather than an .mp4 or MPEG-4. For things that are already in iTunes in other formats, if you've done the steps above, you can highlight the songs you want, click on "advanced" and then choose "Convert Selection to MP3." You'll have two copies of the files then, so delete the non-MP3 version.

Voilà, c'est tout.

This is true. But last time I tried that, it kept the DRM (digital rights managemnt) attached to the song no matter which format it imports it in. This means Apple still controls how many computers you can access the song on; how many times you can burn it to a disc and which external playing devices you can download to. Even when I am under my limit of usage, the mp3s that itunes produces are not compatible with my windows based portable player that plays every other mp3 I've tried.

SoundTaxi not only converts, it also removes the DRM so you can use the song anywhere, anyway and as often as you like. (er... within legal use, of course)
