So...how do you really get into playing in the pit orchestras on and off Broadway??? Whats the big secret? I know they dont have auditions right?

Typically you have to know someone. For me it has been that I am good friends with a music director/conductor of shows. So when she needs a cello she gives me a call. Also if you have a teacher or fellow instrumentalist you can sub shows for them to get your name out there and meet people

You have to be exceptional. I know someone who went to Juilliard and has been in Wicked and South Pacific.

Scary. You can hear ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING amplified from the pit...so if you stuff up - it doesn't go unnoticed.

A little known fact is that in the original screenplay, Pan's Labyrinth was Pan's FLAByrinth. Hmmmmmmm...glad they changed it.

I think that will only work if you have a whole bunch of tv monitors and big sound system.

it will sound ok. But what most all microphones cant pick up are all the natural overtones that a live orchestra produces. So it will sound ok but you might notice a difference that you cant quite put your finger on, especially with a big traditional orchestra. When The Producers was at the St James the pit was too small for the whole orchestra so the harp and timpani were placed in a separate room with a monitor and mics.
