I'm going to say that each was based on a movie.
1. The Apartment became Promises, Promises
2. Elmer Gantry became Gantry
3. East of Eden became Here's Where I Belong
4. Exodus became Ari
#2, 3 & 4: all start with the letter E, and were also film adaptations of successful novels.
