Posted: 6/27/03 at 3:23pmI always heard a slightly different version of this attributed to Spencer Tracy. He was referring to his secret to acting and said "Know your lines, hit your mark and don't bump into the furniture" or something like that. I am sure you are thinking of someone else, however.

Posted: 6/27/03 at 6:09pmI believe that SUE ELLEN is on to something; perhaps various versions of this anecdotal comment have been attributed to many older celebrities.

Posted: 6/27/03 at 6:28pmWill you also answer my question in the "And..." thread too or are you going to completely disappoint me by revealing that you haven't mean it when you said you were interested in honest dialogue and listening and learning? Because I am waiting to listen and looking forward to learning from your response.

Oh, what the hell, I will post the answer now
The answer is Boris Karloff. He played a famous role on Broadway (Capt Hook). My source is the new book Mr S written by Frank Sinatras valet. I doubt he has a reason to lie about this

Posted: 6/28/03 at 12:15pmnot sure anyone is trying to "lie" about the source of this anecdote. I think sometimes people hear a story, use a similar line, and the person hearing the line mistakenly attribute it as original to the speaker they witnessed. I certainly have never heard either version of the "hit your marks" line attributed to Karloff, but it doesn't mean he didn't say something similar at some point in his life.
