My girlfriend and I are planning on going to NY from Dec. 30-Jan.6, but we weren't sure what it was really like during that time period. We really only go for the shows, try to see 10-12 at a time. My questions are will I still be able to see that many during the week or will many shows be dark? We are planning on staying at the Wellington Hotel. Does anyone have any reviews about it and would you suggest it as a place to stay around New Year's? Are there fun things to do around the city around this time frame? Also is it completely crazy to go during New Years and should I try to find some different time period?
I probably asked way too many question, but I really have no one else to ask, so I appreciate all your feedback and comments. THANKS!

I've been in New York twice during this period. You need to pick up Time Out New York that week, because they'll have as complete a schedule of performance changes as you'll be able to find, and you'll want that. Also, if you want to see any particular shows, get the tickets early. We got Chicago with Bebe Neuwirth as Velma in advance, as well as The Producers. You will want to make certain when you book tickets that any particular people you want to see are in the show that night.
There's plenty to do in Manhattan at that time, but realized that it will be very crowded.
All the usual places will be full of families, many with children, but if you're not picky, that's a good thing. Keep in mind that there are some museums where no one goes, such as the marvelous Museum of the City of New York and the Fashion Institute, which are worth a visit. It will be crowded, but since it's been renovated, the MoMA is marvelous, and the Museum of Sex is fun.
I always stay at the Y in midtown, because it's close to Lincoln Center. I mainly go to NYC to see friends and go to the opera.
The day we saw Ragtime was New Year's Eve, and it was so cold, we put bottles of soda outside and they froze. We went to the matinee and had a late lunch at a restaurant near the theatre, then got on the train and went to Queens for a party that night. New Year's Day was still cold and we went to TKTS to get them for a production of June Moon downtown.
You will have a marvelous time in NYC, but do your homework and plan what you want to do so you stay in a section of the city at any particular time. Have Fun!!

Posted: 4/7/07 at 11:43pmI was there this past new years, and the only day I remember being partially dark was New Years Day, which was a Monday so not much was meant to be on in any case. I actually saw a matinee that day though, and managed to find something to see at night, although probably half of the Monday shows were dark. New Years Eve, being a Sunday, still had all of the Sunday matinees running. Just get the hell away from times square as soon as you can on that day!

Posted: 4/8/07 at 1:37amI went last year around that time and saw 10 shows, so there's nothing to worry about.
