Broadway becoming mainstream again?

As I sat in the movie theater watching Bewitched (cute cute movie) I was slowly noticing how Broadway was becoming mainstream. First of all, the Rent movie trailer. Movie musicals are really becoming popular. Whether we agree with them or not, it is becoming the new thing to make movie musicals. As I watched Bewitched I took in the amazing performances by great Broadway stars as Kristin Chenoweth and Carole Shelley. Where the performances by Nicole and Will were less to be desired, the audience, including myself, laughed the most and hardest with the scenes where these actresses were present. During the middle of the movie, after drinking a jumbo soda, I had to leave the movie for a second. As I stepped into the lobby I heard Sherie Renee Scott in DRS over the speakers. Now you have to take into consideration that I live in the middle of Illinois in a not so urban, hip, cultural place. I found this so weird that they would be playing that. Finally, completely unrelated with my night, you have to take into consideration the creation and unfortunate popularity of jukebox musicals. Broadway really is trying to reach out and capture a new audience. Just some thoughts and observations on how I think Broadway is slowly becoming mainstream again!

(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

I agree! I saw "Bewitched" on Monday (RENT trailer included!) and the audience laughed the most during Kristin and Carole's scenes! And they were absolutely silent during the RENT trailer! (Except for my mother, who was singing along! LOL!) And then about a month ago I went with my two best friends to go see "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and we're waiting for the movie to start and I hear "Streetsinger" from Brooklyn! (That was particularly exciting! LOL!)
