Broadway in the Alley

Anyone know if the event is broadcast (officially or unofficially)? 

Is it worth braving the crowds? How early should one get there?

It is not broadcast officially, though someone might Periscope it. I went a couple years ago. The sound quality was bad so I couldn't really hear the performances very well, and because the stage wasn't very high I also couldn't see. There was a lot of pushing and loud talking over the already quiet performance. It may have improved since then, but I would not return based on my experience.
