Broadway makes overtures to Ashley Spencer

AKRON -- A local woman who came so close to winning her dream role on stage says she's already getting offers to perform on Broadway.

Ashley Spencer recently returned to her home in Jackson Township after spending much of the last three months in Hollywood competing on NBC's "Grease: You're The One That I Want."

"I've got a couple offers coming in that I won't speak of right now," Spencer said right now. "But keep a look out because this isn't the last you've seen of me."

Spencer said she's headed to New York this weekend to learn more about some opportunities to perform but remains confident that her future is on the Big Apple stages.

"Well my heart is set for Broadway," Spencer said. "So hopefully someday soon I'll be on that Broadway stage, along side Max and Laura (the winners of the NBC show) but just in a different theater. I'm so happy for them, but I'd also like to get my hands wet in TV and film."

Spencer said her long rehearsal days with NBC taught her a great deal about life on screen versus on stage.

"I like the energy (of live TV)," Spencer said. "It's way different than doing live theater. It's much more intimate and you work off camera angles. You have rehearsals with camera blocking because you're playing into the camera whereas doing it on stage or on Broadway you're playing to the whole house, which was something in the beginning that I had to get used to. I wanted to play just to the studio audience and they're like, 'Ashley you need to be looking' and I'm like 'oh yeah. Right. Right.'"

Spencer's continued success on the show helped her fan base in Northeast Ohio and across the country continue to grow. She said she's grateful that so many took the time to watch and to vote.

"I grew as a person," Spencer said. "Grew as a performer, and just came to find that the experience in itself was amazing. Something that I'd never give up for the world. Whether I make it on Broadway right now, whether it is 'Grease' or the next show I come to, this experience was the best ever.

"I love working so much that it makes me fall asleep at night. Because I'm so tired. I love what I do."
