Second question you can answer both or just one...do you think it is better to have original cast in the movie or not. Take RENT, loved the movie but did it do bad ratings wise because no big names in it.

The Sound of Music. Loved every single one of them! Julie is my goddess. Have to name a few more...
West Side Story!
It was just a gorgeous adaptation. I loved the movie cast. Rita Moreno was magic...would not have replaced her with Chita.
A couple of other ones I love: Grease (sorry, like the movie WAY better than the show), Bye, Bye Birdie, Long Day's Journey Into Night (the version with Jason Robards, Dean Stockwell and Katharine Hepburn), Hello Dolly and Mame. I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch.

West Side Story and Oliver! are my favorite two, Chicago also deserves a worthy mention as well.

You're new around here, ain't ya? :)
Every newbie thinks they will start a question that no one has asked before...and the question has been asked before many times. But no big deal...it bears repeating.
I like the few that are actually BETTER than the stage shows:
CALL ME MADAM
SILK STOCKINGS
FLOWER DRUM SONG
SOUND OF MUSIC
FUNNY GIRL
GREASE
I would add CABARET except the movie is based on the play I AM A CAMARA with some of te Cabaret songs inserted. It is a brilliant film - but it is not a film of the stage musical.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

And of course, they're good films. Often you end up with something like "On The Town" which kept one number and substituted a better (s**t) score by others who never wrote for Broadway in their lives.

Posted: 5/30/06 at 9:49amI don't think it's better to have the OBC repeat their roles in film versions of musicals. It's nice to see cast members from a historical point of view, but the track record for success isn't very good. For every Yul Brynner, Rex Harrison and Robert Preston... I can give you half a dozen creaky, stilted film performances that could have been better if they'd used a film star or actor. (I should point out that both Rex Harrison and Robert Preston WERE film actors long before they created their iconic stage musical roles.)

RENT and THE PRODUCERS may not have done well at the box office, but they were faithful and wonderful beyond words because the OBC casts were in it for the most part
I loved them both and am glad they were made and are my favorites. (Rosario is better than Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi, anyway)
PHANTOM, with the exception of Butler, was beautiful, and did better box office-wise than the others. Only because it's POTO and people wanted to see POTO, no matter who was in it. I enjoyed it, but it would be better with a better Phantom. Yes, they chose Hollywood casting ideals and it suffered. It still was magnificent simply because of the music and story and Emmy & Patrick.
CHICAGO was brilliant and the proff is in the Oscar
I enjoyed A CHORUS LINE, too.
