The requisite ballad that will ultimately be reprised at least 3 times including a stirring, stand facing the crowd and singing loudly and in unison, "I Wish I Could Quit You"... it fits all the couples so well... Jack/Ennis, Jack/His Wife, Ennis/Alma, Ennis/Waitress, Jack/various lovers, and, sadly, Jack's Parents...
Therefore, we need a "sensitive" type, and a "gregarious" type. I nominate Christopher J. Hanke as Ennis (will at least make folks forget In My Life) and Matthew Morrison as Jack.

John Hill and Matthew Morrison. Heck yes, man.
That'd be so hot, let's be serious.

I think 'Brokeback Mountain' initially got joked about as a 'gay cowboy movie,' but anyone who's seen it, knows it's so much more, and it's gotten tons of respect. Just witness all the awards and the box-office records it's setting. In that spirit, if you really love this movie, I heartily recommend the following Brokeback fan site. It's got a discussion board with threads about favorite scenes, the box office, the awards, interviews with the cast, photos of Heath and Jake, comparisons between the short story and the movie, etc. ... And 'Oprah' is looking for fans of Heath and Jake; see the site for details.
For what it's worth, the site is run by Dave Cullen, a professional journalist who's written for the New York Times.

Posted: 1/12/06 at 12:19amI have no trouble simultaneously loving the film, which I definitely do, and having fun envisioning the endlessly silly possibilities of reshaping it into a Broadway musical.

I could totally imagine it...
In the Sound of Music style... they both would run out to the top of a mountain shaped mound, and as the music swells... Jack would burst into..
"The hills are alive,
with the sound of Bareback."
And then they'd make out.
For the whole show.
This is a gay musical theatre lover's fantasy.
Totally Patrick as Ennis and Cheyenne as Jack, all the way, if we're going with already established stars.
Also, Audra McDonald could star as the mountain, and she'd sing an aria everytime they met.
Hey, I can dream.

Brokeback should never be a musical, but the song game is fun!
"I Lost My Hat, You Found My Heart" - Lureen's song
"How To Forget You" - the boys
"My Father's a Homo (as written by William Finn)" - a new scene with Alma Jr. at her wedding
"No Work This Year, Boys" - Joe

Posted: 1/12/06 at 9:05pmIn a seriousness, the idea of Brokeback the musical isjust wrong, but I would love to see it as a non musical play.
