1010 WINS, the all-news station, featured some of the cast members singing songs from the production. You had to hear it to believe how BAD these poor kids sounded. "Mr Cellophane" NEVER sounded worse! Obviously the music director didn't know what he was doing, either!
Too many times a teacher is thrown a job like this even though he or she isn't qualified. I worked with a music director who auditioned kids for shows without ever opening the score OR listening to the tape that I'd made of the music for her. As a result, she didn't know that the Countess sang in THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Her only exposure to the score was in the blasted movie.
The poor girl we cast in the role turned out to be tone deaf.
Why don't these things happen on sports teams?
This really irritates me. I can understand allowing them to do the show. I've been in school plays and know how much work goes into it and it's not the kids' fault their teacher is an idiot. (We bought the rights, by the way.) I think it's atrocious to write a script that's part Internet-based, part movie, and part original.
And why wasn't I flown to Londion to meet Ewan and the cast of Guys and Dolls? We PAID for the rights!
I'm not saying its the kids fault ... Because it's not. I don't think ... however, that teacher should be fired because the school can get a HUGE lawsuit. They're lucky they are letting them put the show on.
I say the kids and the teacher should be Horse Whipped by Munk in Times Square for FOX news at 10 PM.
