That is the worst show I've seen on a Broadway stage. I just got home, and it makes me so mad that people are giving that a standing ovation. Someone please tell me it is the performers they're applauding and nothing else.
Seriously, I'm just pissed off.

I didn't want to post.. but here it is..
Many people love BROOKLYN, and the cast, songs, and everything about it. And yes, I love brooklyn too! :)

I have to respectfully disagree. I went to see Brooklyn with no predisposed notion and very little knowledge about the show. It was very good. I will agree that the strength of the show is the performers as vocally this was a very strong group.
I enjoyed the unique presentation and actually liked the book.

---What? What was unique about it? The book??! What book?!!? You mean the HORRIBLE lines between the HORRIBLE songs??
Having slept on it, I've come to some more realizations:
1. I felt embarassed for the performers... the book is atrocious. I give the performers props for doing such amazing jobs at trying to find some sort of heart in a completely soul-less story. It's clear that they've transported themselves to that magic headspace of putting all energy and heart behind the piece they're involved in - they've lost all perspective.
2. La-di-da-dah, dah-dah, La...da-di-dah... seemed to be the only hook in the whole show. How depressing. A show full of soul-less soul-singing.
3. Isn't the war story aspect of the show a little offensive to anyone who has been to war??? To play it so seriously and so lightly at the same time! I was offended, and I've never been to war. How ridiculous.
4. The Magic Man? What?! What's he for? Nothing... stupid song, too. Suddenly, the lead player from Pippin pops in?
5. Lyrics.... unimaginative, trite, and awkward....
Maybe I've been a bit harsh. But as a member of the NOW generation (I'm 24), I must say it appalls me that audiences seem to be loving this.
Remember RENT? Oh, what I'd do for another show like that.

Okay, I need to say:
I'm a Sondheim lover. I love the beauty of his works. I love William Finn. I love Ricky Ian Gordon. I love Adam Guettel. Jason Robert Brown. Thought-provoking works. And yes, I hate everything about 'Wicked'. I'm praying it closes tomorrow. But...
I thoroughly enjoyed 'Brooklyn'. Okay. It's nothing spectacular. It's not thought-provoking. It didn't make for an incredible night at the theater. But there is a lot of beauty to the production. It's visually stunning and incredibly creative. The idea behind it is simple, but the idea behind Lorca's masterpiece 'Blood Wedding' is simple, too. Possibly even simpler.
I wouldn't go as far as calling 'Brooklyn' trash. I wouldn't go as far as calling it a masterpiece either. But there is the simple beauty to it to really consider, I think.

And nothing's going to be spectacular, but if you take it for what it is instead of setting a high standard (I mean, you can't put Sondheim and... I don't know. Boy George in the same group. They're COMPLETELY different.) and expecting it to beat it - you might find some beauty in it.

That's a really dispiriting post. What, because we're living now, musical theatre is supposed to suck?
As far as your mention of Boy George, the Taboo score was a much more accomplished piece of pop musical theatre writing than the score for Brooklyn. Taboo was a mess of a show, but to my eyes and ears, had much more to recommend it than Brooklyn.

Being a theatre fanatic like the rest of you, we have seen many things and have come to expect a certain level of excellence from a production and when it's not there, there is nothing wrong with saying so. I haven't seen Brooklyn yet so I'm not commenting on it at all but only saying that there is nothing wrong with making judgements and having realistically high standards for the shows on Broadway. It is a sad day when we settle...and hell we wouldn't have this board if we did!
