No idea.
I thought the CD had generic lyrics and mediocre melodies.

The CD is great, I think its hard to appreciate some songs out of context of the show, when performed on stage, the lyrics become the dialogue of the show.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 10:30amYeah, KMF - I guess the guy who won a Grammy for the "Annie Get Your Gun" cast CD and produced the incredibly awesome "Taboo" CD and won several Emmys for his music work on 'The Rosie O'Donnell Show' has no clue what he's doing with the music on BKLYN...you're right.

I was hopeful about this show, but as posted elsewhere (by me and others) ... I just don't think this score is going to put BROOKLYN on the map. What's troubling: the show's negative reviews in Denver focussed on its lame book/story. The score was treated as its strength. I think its generic pop/"soul" (quotations critical) sound has been done to death, albeit with far better results--and frankly, to my over-pop-souled ears, this material makes both WICKED and AIDA look like vintage R&H.
I lilke John McD, too, but I thought his arrangements for ANNIE GET OUR GUN diluted the originals dreadfully. I'll never forgive his re-arrangement of "Sun in the Morning" that make it slower and jazz-infused.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 2:01pmWell, Auggie, I guess we ought to just hang Mr. McDaniel and everyone else involved in BKLYN upside down in Times Square and flog them 'til dead. It is apparently the only thing that will please the critical and discerning minds of those who post here. And when your music arrangements, orchestrations and accomplishments are lauded, applauded and awarded - would you post about them? I'd love to hear about it.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 2:44pmWell, Matty, maybe if I were I'd have a better grasp of why all the mud is slung around these parts. This show hasn't even gone into previews yet, and everywhere you look on these boards someone is trashing the music, trashing the star, trashing the book, trashing the director and on ad nauseum. It's worse than high school. Somebody needs to slice these guys a break and just let them put their show together.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 2:59pmWhere is this mud-slinging? People are just discussing the music and critiquing what they've heard. That's the purpose of a message board. This isn't supposed to be some lovefest where everyone adores everything they've seen or heard.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 3:08pmMy theory as to why most new shows are trashed on this, as well as other, Broadway message boards is that most people on these boards can't speak knowledgeably about them because they are new. They can't wax sentimental about previous incarnations, recount their experiences appearing in summer stock and dinner theatre productions, compare the show or the perfomances, or any other aspect of the production, in any way to a past production. It doesn't give them much to say until they've actually seen the show. And taking into consideration that many posters don't live in, or near, the NYC area, it may be a while before they're able to see a new show, if ever. That's just my theory. Of course, in their defense, listening to the same people go on and on and on about how great a show is before they've even seen it, gets tiring after a while. I actually read on one thread... "Brooklyn is a great show! I can't wait to see it!"

I'm hoping the show is better than the cd. I guess I'll find out in 2 weeks.
I don't mind Once Upon a Time, but the others seem like such cliched "R&B" pieces. As if they said "Now, let's make sure it's REAL soulful, OK!"
You know what? From the cd, no, I don't want to get to know the heart behind those hands. And Raven, you are not a poet. "Beneath this armor I bleed?" Ummmm, didn't Shakespeare say essentially the same thing, much more poetically about 500 years ago?
But, I am hoping for the best.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 3:24pmI wonder what people would have thought of the music from "Dreamgirls", hearing it for the first time. Imagine hearing "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" for the first time, and out of context from the show. Do you think they would have predicted it would become the hit it did? Or would they have thought that it sounded too "Pop-ish" or "R&B" for Broadway?

Rarely do I get into the back and forth diatribes, but Usta -- you need to understand how the boards work -- the thread is titled "Brooklyn the muscial/Sample CD" -- no where in my opinion did I refer to a show NOT yet in previews or anything other than what I listened to. You obvioulsy have a different opinion and are certainly entitled to it -- at least be resoectful of others or offer some substance to your retorts....
I hope you enjoy the production and I hope it does well as I hope any show does -- a lot of hard work, sweat, tears and joy goes into any production.
I think we all want to see any production suceed becasue it adds to the health and vitality of Broadway, even if we do not care for it.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 3:54pmAbsolutely, KMF - and thank you for that. I just don't see how referring to something as "dreck" is helpful in any direction, or part of "just discussing" as Mattio claims. I think when you see people post the BKLYN logo and change the words to "Attack of the Shills" you really have to wonder if everyone really wants to see a production succeed and I think it's all of that seems like high school negativity and show bashing. I couldn't agree with you more about the health and vitality of Bway but I was just wondering aloud of the "health" factor of these various posts. That's all.

Posted: 9/16/04 at 5:44pmPersonally, I'm very much looking forward to Brooklyn and I hope that it does succeed. However, the shilling on this board is becoming intolerable and unfortunately it may negatively affect some readers opinion of the show itself.

I am always surprised anew when debates ensue about the very act of expressing reactions here --- to music, performances, writing. What, pray tell, is a place like this about if not the sharing of contrasting opinions, speculations, reflections? What (newer) people need to understand is: when we hear specific music, or see a snippet of a performance, we are entitled to have a very specific, subjective, individual reaction. We own our opinions, and share them to bounce them off others. We do not post to bar people from the box office, to close shows, or to destroy careers. We post to embrace ... but also, to contrast and compare. The broadway theater is a high stakes arena -- almost a hundred bucks a seat these days. Those who enter this fray do their best, but those who pay to attend ... are entitled to expect the best. Ah, and yes ... the "best" is in the eye of the beholder. My advice: Get used to it.
Sometimes, we sound gaga, like a fan club, and sometimes we sound like a group of disgruntled audience members sitting around a bar till closing, deconstructing a disappointing evening in the theater. Both dynamics happen here. I have had near brawls with those holding differing points of view, and over time grown to truly appreciate and savor the reactions of those who disagree with me. We get worked up, we steam ... we leave for a while ... and sometimes we learn from one another too.
