Posted: 2/8/05 at 8:44pmHave you all heard this album? I think it's rather amazing. What do you all think of opera singers doing musical theatre?

Posted: 2/8/05 at 9:30pmI'm not a fan of this album. It's usually a nightmare when opera singers attempt Broadway songs (Pavarotti doing "Send in the Clowns", anyone?).

Posted: 2/9/05 at 11:04amIt took some *dedicated* listening to get used to these HUGE voices singing songs that I was accustomed to hearing performed a certain way. (It would have helped if Ms. Renee had eased up just a bit on the Very Proper Operatic Diction, but I'm a devoted fan and will forgive her most everything.) It's now one of my favorites, but it's definitely one of those things you either love or loathe -- not a lot of room for in-between.

Posted: 2/9/05 at 11:39amI like Terfel very much. But cannot appreciate Fleming. Why I feel she sounds like swallow something when she sings?

i don't like either of them. It's not that they're opera singers, (i am an operatically trained singer myself) it's that i just absolutely hate their voices. Terfel CONSTANTLY sings using only his throat (or so it seems) and miss fleming sounds like she has a sock down her throat or something. They do a perfectly hideous "All I Ask Of You" (more marred by a disgusting orchestration than their bad singing) and the orchestration and conducting on the whole is just bad.
It's not good.
If you want to hear a classical singer sing broadway, get one of the fabulous Anthony Warlow's recordings. Far superior to Terfel.
