Bus Stop

Does anyone want to see a Broadway revival of the play Bus Stop done. I just recently became interested in this show and I love it. I would love to see Rachel McAdams play Cherie.

Just read a story yesterday about a production at OrShakes.

I saw a regional production of this several years ago when I was just getting into theatre. I don't remember much about it cause I saw Death of a Salesman the same day and it made more of a lasting impression.

I do remember enjoying Bus Stop, though and I would be inclined to see a revival.

It's a shame so many people only know it through the movie, which eliminated the character of Dr. Lyman, the drunken professor with a taste for underage girls, who befriends Alma, the young waitress. Lyman is the best of the supporting characters.

If you want to see some mind-blowing acting, check out BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE. It has a segment on Kim Stanley and actual footage of the original broadway production. The clips are brief, but astonishing.

"Lyman is the best of the supporting characters."

And a very tragic character as well.

Kim Stanley, Anthony Ross, Elaine Stritch....could any revival possible top this cast?

re: Bus Stop

I saw a production of Bus Stop in 2005 at the Shaw Festival and a new aspect of the play was revealed to me.

At the very end of the production there was a whiff of homoerotica. Why does Virgil leave Bo instead of heading back to help with the ranch in Montana? Because he has loved Bo unrequitedly all along, and now he sees that it isn't going to happen. It is best for all if he leaves.

I wasn't the only one who caught this. I mentioned it to a straight couple the next day and they said they had felt the same.

This really added some depth to the play for us that it hadn't had before.

It's a great play, but on the segment on Broadway: The Golden Age-
What great footage he got for that film! That film is 10 times better than the commercialized PBS miniseries.

re: Bus Stop

I think it is Inge's best play. A top-notch revial would be welcomed.

I would have liked to see what Gerald Gutierrez could do with the material. But alas...

I too would love to see this revived!

re: Bus Stop

I thought I had remembered a fairly recent revival. It was at Circle in the Square, with this cast:

Billy Crudup Bo Decker
Mary-Louise Parker Cherie
Ron Perlman Dr. Gerald Lyman
Kelly Bishop Grace Hoylard
Michael Cullen Carl
Patricia Dunnock Elma Duckworth
Larry Pine Virgil Blessing
Scott Sowers Will Masters

Not bad...and interesting with the recent Bishop Worship on this board in response to the CHORUS LINE revival.

I saw this revival. It was mediocre.

I have had the good fortune to direct a production of "Bus Stop" and would direct it again if I had the chance! I feel the work of William Inge is vastly underrated. Both "Bus Stop" and "Picnic" are among my favorite plays. I don't think the show is dated and would make an excellent candidate for revival.

re: Bus Stop

I played Virgil in High School. It was actually a tough role. And I agree with the homoerotic attraction Virgil had towards Bo. It was played as more fatherly in my production, but hey, that's high school.

Acting wise, it was probably the best show we did, although compared to bigger name shows and big musicals, the least appreciated as a whole.
