"Musicals based on movies have met with varying degrees of success recently: From uber-hits "Hairspray" and "The Producers" to flops like "Urban Cowboy" and "Dance of the Vampires." The buzz on Broadway is that Bill Augustin and Andrew Abrams' "But I'm a Cheerleader" could be the next big show.
Producers are jostling to get into the musical's first reading at Primary Stages on Jan. 12. Laura Bell Bundy ("Hairspray"), Stephanie Kurtzuba ("The Boy From Oz") and Nancy Opel ("Urinetown") will take part in the reading, based on the 1998 cult flick about a cheerleader whose parents send her to a "rehabilitation" camp after she tells them she's gay."

I know there's been mention of this before, but I was wondering what everyone thinks. Has anyone else actually seen this movie? I've never heard of it, but it sounds like an interesting film like "Hairspray" or "Welcome to the Dollhouse". And with Hairspray's success, you never do know about a musical with a lesbian cheerleader.

HAHA. I think that its an interesting idea for a musical. I don't know if the content is something that will attract all sorts of people (like HAIRSPRAY or THE PRODUCERS) but it is a fantastical movie with hilarious potential.
yes its a very good movie. Extremely interesting and original. As a musical? Well, it should be interesting.
At three o'clock, you are going to get raped.
-Welcome to the Dollhouse-
Haha. I love that movie.
I thought Laura Bell Bundy was doing a workshop for Tarzan sometime in January- How can she do both? Oh and dont forget she is the star replacement for Kristen Chenoweth on selected performances god knows when.
