But it's on TOUR now? - A general question
But it's on TOUR now? - A general question#0

Okay, so after a pretty crazy weekend working the big Alumnae Reunion at my college, I have come up with a question for the board- is it just the people in my area, or does the general populace NOT realize that a show can be both running in New York and still be on tour?
I must have had no less than half a dozen people- once they heard I was a musical theater major- start talking about Broadway and ask, "Well, what's playing in New York right now?" I'd list off a few and have them respond with, "But that's on tour now." Uhhm, yep. Indeedy. It... IS possible to have more than one cast of a show. Lots of actors out there an' all that.
I dunno. Maybe it's just me, but these people were driving me nuts!!

Maybe it's just the people in your area as some of them even start sentences with "Okay"
Did you actually graduate from that college whose reunion you worked on?

Posted: 6/6/06 at 11:24amNo, dude, I totally understand! One of my really good friends was telling me, "So I heard Wicked closed on Broadway and is touring now...do you want to go see it." I was like, "What?" - I guess if you don't know, it just seems kind of odd to have three productions of the same show running in the country. My friend also wanted to know how they manage to house so many musicals in one theater because she thought Broadway was just a theater, not a street. Which I guess, with the Broadway Theater, can get sort of confusing if you don't know.

I like having the chance to explain how Broadway/theatre works, that you can have a show running on Broadway AND have a tour going at the same time.
But most of the people I know are Bway fans, too, and understand the way things are.

Posted: 6/6/06 at 11:49amTrue and some shows do close (like Little Women) and tour, but I guess it's just a hard concept. I have a friend who knows so much about theater - he knows the opening date of RENT and the original cast of Sunday in the Park with George - but he told me Wicked closed on Broadway and is now touring. I was like "Are you kidding me? That show is making millions a week."

Posted: 6/6/06 at 11:51amI had something like this happen to me. A friend that I dance with didnt get why "Movin' Out" wasnt up for any Tonys last year. Therefore I had to explain to her the Broadway works in seasons, much like out community theatre. It took a while to get it all in her head of how the Tonys work. Urg...

Posted: 6/6/06 at 12:20pmThat's funny. After we saw RENT, I once had a friend ask me, "So every show plays every night? And there are different actors for all of them." Umm... yeah.
