Buying Cds in theatres or in shops ?
Buying Cds in theatres or in shops ?#0

Just wanted to ask, if price-wise it is better to buy my cast recordings in the souvenir kiosk of the theaters or in record stores ? Are there any price differences ? Of course I know that there shouldn't be any big differences but I am just curious. Which is the cheapest New York cd store ?

Posted: 11/23/03 at 1:21pmthe Cd's at the theatre are usually full price. So if you can get a cd at the store on sale go with that. In my experiences shopping online is the cheapest! l8r~

Posted: 11/23/03 at 1:31pmNormally cast recordings at a show's theatre are a straight 20 bucks. If you want to save a few dollars, try Best Buy where the CDs range from 7.99 - 15.99 normally.

Posted: 11/23/03 at 2:14pmCDs at the theatre are usually anywhere to $3-$5 more. For example I got my RENT CD, which is a double compact disc set, for $32 at Barnes and Nobles, but the price in the theatre was somewhere in the $40's-$50 dollars. Even online they may be discounted, but dont forget about shipping and handling. Go for Best Buy and Borders- borders discounts the newly released cast recordings a lot.

Yes, I get most of them from the Internet, but since I am gonna be in NYC I would love to buy right on the spot some OCR which I don't have like "Boy from Oz", "Cabaret", "Aida" maybe "Avenue Q" etc. So, i guess my best bet is Borders and Best Buy. I'll keep them in mind, thanks. I plan to buy so much merchandise from the theaters that I am sure they won't mind if i get my CDs from somewhere else. :)

If you know you are going to like the show or you want to buy the cd ahead of time. Go to the Virgin Mega-Store. Usually the brand new ones are on sale.
However, I have been in theaters where the cd is released ahead of the "general sales." And I have bought them on the spot due to the love of the music or not being able to wait.

Even some music stores overcharge. What's the name of that store across the street from the Olive Garden and TKTS? Colonial Records or something like that? They have great stuff in there, but their prices can be really high. ![]()
I buy mine at either Best Buy, FYE, or Virgin Megastore.

Posted: 11/24/03 at 8:21amI saw the Gypsy CD at the Virgin Megastore for $14.99 and thought, "Oh, I'll wait until I get to the theatre." It was $25.00 at the Shubert. Oops.

True and sometimes you find cds that are by the artist who are in the show that normally you would not know had a cd of music out.
But Colony Records, as expensive as it is, is wonderful for obscure cds and Karoake CDs
I usually go to Footlight too for all the female and male vocalists from all over the country.

Posted: 11/24/03 at 12:39pmWell, that's true. And usually I do buy my cd's at the theatre itself. It just kind of hurt a little when the merch gal says "$25.00 please" when I had just seen the same thing not one or two or three but TEN dollars cheaper at Virgin.

Of course I would love to support the show. And I am definetely not talking about $2 or $3 difference. That is the reason I asked, since it is my first time on Broadway. But for $10 I could buy another souvenir program or a mug for a friend. I could still support the show and get something else instead of just throwing $10 for no reason. And as I said, I am definetely gonna buy a lot of merchandise from every show like I always do in London. All my tickets are full price plus the merchandise, I think i am doing my share of support :)
