In my English class, we read the Scarlet Letter and one of our project options is to make a CD soundtrack for the book. So far I have two songs:
Somebody's Eyes from Footloose- because the people of the Purtian community are always watching for sin
Home from Piece- because of the close relationship between Hester and Pearl.
I need a song about guilt preferably sung by a man because it will be used for Dimmesdale battling his guilt over to tell the truth or not.
Any suggestions?

"What about Open Road from NYTW Rent? "
Whats that?
There actually IS a musical by Marc Governor of the Scarlet Letter that deals with all this...

What about "Nobody Needs to Know" from The Last 5 Years? It's sung by a man, and it's about both guilt and adultery, so it would seem to tie in to the Scarlet Letter very well.
"Who Am I" from Les Mis! I think its perfect for what you are looking for!
"sue me" from guys and dolls- kinda romantic guilt but may not be right for what you're going for...
"Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Mis.
The Wife's Statement from See What I Wanna See

For Dimmesdale, how about HELLFIRE from THE HUNCHBACK FROM NOTRE DAME (Menken/Schwartz)?
Keeping with my previous suggestion of a JRB song....
"On the Deck of a Spanish Sailing Ship" from Songs for a New World. Not so much guilt as repentance, but still may work.
Edit: Also, "Children of Eden" from the show of the same name. Although it's a woman singing...I'm not sure how strict your "preferably a man" requirement is....
uhhh Your Eyes from RENT? hes feeling guilty about not being forward about his feelings for Mimi, but I havent read the book so I may be totally off

This probably doesn't apply to The Scarlet Letter, but the reprise of "The Beauty Is" from The Light in the Piazza is about Margaret's guilt over not being there when Clara was kicked by the horse.

"Did I Take A Step Too Far" from Aida. It's a trio, but it might be worth checking out.
"Easy as Life" from Aida
The Judge's "Johanna" from Sweeney Todd, although I can't find all the lyrics to check. But what I remember from the show seems like it would fit.
