He's doing it to be a good sport and help out the production instead of them having problems.
Dreyfuss has been known to bail out at last minute.

Posted: 10/18/04 at 2:51pmHe not only stayed in Sly Fox,Matt-he also paraded around w/a sandwich board to boost sales @ one point.I'm not a fan of his,but I'm a little suprised @the vehemence of all the cheap shots being taken @ him...

Posted: 10/18/04 at 2:56pmI think he had doubts from the start about whether he could do the role. This whole thing is a mess, but he's not entirely to blame. You think he likes backing out at the last minute like that?

Dreyfuss did express his own concern about the role but he did take it after all of that and Brooks DID cast him.
So now the rest of the cast and Lane are paying the price. Yes, Lane is getting a lot of money to do this but money only goes so far. We'd all like to have the money but the fact is that the role of Max has been a thorn since Lane left it and the person who has done the best job of filling the shoes has been Brad Oscar in spite of them trying to find big names to play the role.
Lane has said that he wants to be recognized for things other than being a slap stick comic and I for one hope he can still find the time and energy to bring Butley to Broadway after this very busy year. I LOVE his Max but it's time to move on (after doing it again in the movie, of course).
Dreyfuss had back problems and shoulder problems in Sly Fox and I would have thought at that point that they all would have circled the wagons and rethought this London thing, but they didn't...so London...here comes Nathan Lane

Posted: 10/18/04 at 6:44pmI'd like to see some of Nathan's opening night improvs. I'd bet he'll say something about having to come over on such short notice

Posted: 10/18/04 at 6:51pmLane will forever be tied to this role now. I hope the producers will do very well in the west end.
