CAROUSEL questions

Does anyone else get the impression in CAROUSEL that Julie has a history with Enoch Snow? And that he's possibly the father of her baby? My director suggested this to our cast and I was like, ok, but now I feel like it's actually implied in the script- like how Julie avoids looking at him when Carrie introduces them, she cries when she kisses him ... he says something like, "I like planting flowers and taking care of them... does your husband like that, Julie?", which kind of seems like a metaphor for raising a family! Call me crazy! Also in the first song, when Carrie sings, "you never tell me nothin'", Julie replies there's nothing she cares to choose to tell.

Also, what do you think is Nettie's story? Widow? Is she resigned to not have a lover again or does she still have the occasional hookup? She sings all about love in JUNE but doesn't have a partner. Curious to hear some thoughts! Thank you!

It's a queer thing..but I've always thought that there was some sort of uneasiness between Snow and Julie, that was personal rather than Snow having to put up with his girlfriend/wife's best friend.

In Liliom, there is a character, a carpenter, who is in love with Julie, he has a very steady job, in contrast to Liliom (Billy), but she doesn't return his interest at all. I've often wondered if, in the creation of Carousel, Hammerstein had in mind to combine the roles of Wolf Beifeld - the equivalent of Enoch Snow - and the carpenter. Obviously, it's not spelt out in the script, but it adds a little frisson and I have seen it played that way.

Which, of course, is a long way from saying that Snow and Julie had a baby together, which is not there.

Tell your director he should read the play LILIOM and stop being an ass. The only troubled relationship in CAROUSEL is Jigger's lust for Billy. Why do you think he dislikes Mrs Mullins so much?
