CHER committed as MAME for TV Film

Carla Hay in Billboard yesterday says Cher has committed to star in the tv film version of the musical MAME.
I think Cher will be simply divine...........A while back we heard that La Streisand would be directing. That would be very exciting.
If Streisand is directing I would gather that James Brolin might have the insider chance to play Beauregard.
There seems a chance that Streisand may herself play Vera... of course likely choices these days are also
Megan Mullaly
Christine Baranski
Lisa Kudrow
I have always thought Carol Channing would bring wonderful things to the part of Vera.
I have also thought for a long time that Hal Linden would be just right as Beauregard.
I wonder who will play Agnes. It seems that they might consider Molly Shannon or Kristen Chenowith.
Any thoughts?

whoever cast Cher should be the one committed.
Mulally would make it somewhat tolerable. I hope they don't destroy this show....again.

Posted: 8/23/03 at 12:49pmNo offense Billy. You really really really gotta do some a-readin' and a-learnin'. There are books, there are websites, there are videos. It's really fun to research and learn and not just rely on the Cliff's Notes of message boards. Seriously.

Posted: 8/23/03 at 12:51pmBilly Lawlor, how long have you been into theatre? Mame is a classic! It's about a boy who's parents die and he goes to live with his eccentric aunt. He goes off to college and she gets married, but her husband dies in an avalanche. Then he returns to New York to introduce his new fiancee to his aunt. They both discover she's a bitch, he finds someone new, they have a kid, and his aunt takes her new GREAT nephew under her wing.

Posted: 8/23/03 at 1:29pmPeople, People! I'm only 14! I do a lot of research and shows that I like, and that I want to know more about. I have heard of Mame, but I never bothered to look it up. I've only been in the theater since I was...I don't know, 10? I may not know a lot about this show in particular, but I do not a lot about other shows and theater in general. I think I've proved that on this board, haven't I?

I think they should consider Stockard Channing as Vera. Is there any doubt that Chenoweth will be signed on to play Gooch?
Billy, if you are an actor, you should look into Mame. Mame is a popular show done all over the country. At some point in your career, you might play Young Patrick or Grown Patrick.
Everyone who likes Mame should read the "Auntie Mame" books by Patrick Dennis that it is based on.

BillyLawlor, Mame is, in short, about celebrating the bounty of life to its fullest.
Cher is inspired casting (she's already played a version of the role in Tea With Mussolini). Chenoweth is far too attractive and not "character-y" enough for Gooch.

Posted: 8/23/03 at 7:03pmYou know; I think Cher is going to be great. I have seen her now on tour 3 times and she puts on a great show. Her voice is in excellent shape these days and her larger than life persona will hopefully serve the role well. No disrespect for the person that said they should hold off for Bernadette ( I love Bernadette). But Bernadette in a tv movie of Mame sounds so boring. Also ; I just saw a rerun of Cher on Oprah. She talked about being faithful to the original and superior play while using the score of the musical. What do people think of that? By the way.. I am new to this board.. so please express your opinion.. but don't trash mine :)

There was a non-musical movie version of MAME with Rosalind Russell. But I was lucky ( and that old
) to have seen the Angela Lansbury musical version on Broadway. A few years ago, I was glad to have been able to get a copy of a CD of the musical.
I think Cher is a good choice. I had seen Tea with Mussolini and she played an almost Mame-like character in the movie.
I am hoping they will eventually release the TV film on DVD.

Hey Mr. T! Long time, no see.
I do have say that not everyone knows everything there is to know about theater like *some* of you do. One would think that a theater board would be the place to find out about a play/musical. If someone has an honest question about a play, they should be able to ask it without fear of being blasted.
You would think that the "older" folks would jump for the chance to share their knowledge. What better way to introduce the younger folks to Broadway?

Don't ever be sorry you asked a honest question, BL. It's the only way your going to learn about some things. I ask them all the time. I NEVER would have known what a "Bling Bling" was if I hadn't asked DollyPop!
