For those of you who have been following Chris Durang's musical, ADRIFT IN MACAO, which is currently having its premiere at the Philadelphia Theatre Co, you will get a kick out of this. Michael Rupert (who is fantastic in the role of "Rick Shaw," the suave nightclub owner) was too sick to go on for today's matinee. Instead of cancelling the show (he does not have an understudy), Chris Durang hopped on an accella express down to philly, had a 1.5 hour put in rehearsal, and went on in his place. The audience went INSANE!! After his solo, people were yelling "encore!"
That's so cool. Hopefully his new show (Miss Witherspoon) is as good.
Huh. I spent a lot of today rehearsing a Durang one-act- we all went to see Adrift in Macao last week. Now I wish we had gone today! It's a fun show, though a somewhat spotty one.

its a musical? or do you mean his monologue?
It's a musical, with music by Peter Melnick. Rick Shaw has a number about how pissed he is he didn't get a song, and says he commissioned one for himself because he deserves it. It's very "Diva's Lament," but is actually a better number, and the show has been kicking around for several years, so you can't accuse Durang and Melnick of just copying Spamalot.
I reviewed the show here. It's fun, if slight and not always quite there, if you know what I mean. But I recommend it anyway.

I saw the opening night performance of Adrift in Macao. I thought it was really funny. The only thing that that bothered wasJennie Eisenhaur was soooo hot, I wish that she was used more in that show. Her little asian getup was enough to bring me back to see the show again. It would have been fun to see Durang do the show too. Bummed that I missed it.
Oooh, I really want to see this!

Does anyone know what Michael Rupert was ailing from? Hope he gets better! You gotta love Chris Durang!

Michael Rupert had bronchitis. But he is doing MUCH better and is slated to return to the show tomorrow!
Thanks for the kind well wishes. Michael had been battling a bad cold for about two days. Then Saturday night he started to be a little worse, and by Sunday morning, the cold had gone into his chest and he had a case of laryngitis. Luckily, the amazing Christopher Durang was able to come to Philly and step in for Michael, so the show would not have to be canceled. Michael is doing a lot better and will be back in the show Tuesday night, November 8th.

Ok, this is a little bit off-topic, but whatever. Does anyone know if his show in L.A right now, Betty's Summer Vacation, is any good?
