Cabaret Cast Album

I have had the Cabaret film soundtrack for years, now. I was wondering if the OBC album would still be a good purchase. I mean how does it compare. Better, worse? How are the instrumentals? Thanks for the help

The original (not revival) is great. Especially to hear the changes in the score. The Money Song is completely different and the film score cut about half the original songs from the show. In my opinion, the OBC recording is far superior to the film soundtrack.

The original Don Walker orchestrations are thrilling. It's a much more expansive and glossy sound than what you've come to expect from the soundtrack. Not to mention, great performances and, omg, Lotte Lenya! Well worth your investment.

I love the revival cast recording.... but I want the original!!! =-)

Yes the original is superb, i also have original london cast with dame judi dench as sally which is incrdible, i also have the new revival and studio recording with maria friedman as sally.

they are all different and superb in their own ways.

OBC is worth having for Alan Cumming's emcee alone! I have to warn you that Natasha Richardson is pretty weak vocally. She emotes the character very well, but is not always on pitch (especailly during "Maybe This Time"). *shrugs* Maybe she was someone you had to see perform to really appreciate.

I got the film soundtrack first and loved the music, then i got the New Cast Recording and like it SOOOO much more! Everything is jsut much bigger, clearer, the songs are longer and there are a bunch of other great ones that aren't in the movie (ie "Don't Tell Mama", "Perfectly Marvelous", "I Don't Care Much"). Anyway, if you have only heard the soundtrack i definelty recommend teh revival cd. I havn't heard much of the OCR, but I'm sure it is great too.

The stage score is superior to the film score, especially as many great songs from the show were not used in the film. If you are a CABARET fan, you really need ALL of the CDs. The revival cast has the wonderful Allan Cumming renditon of I DON'T CARE MUCH which was cut from the original show and reinstated for the revival. The OBC, however, captures Lotte Lenya's legendary performance as Fraulein Schneider - the songs were written specifically for her and she WAS Berlin in the 1930s.

There is also the excellent studio cast double CD that includes the entire score plus cut songs, the film songs and the song written for the 1987 revival, DON'T GO - and it has the outstanding Maria Friedman as Sally.

The film score is only good for Liza fans, which I partially am. The OBC is indeed excellent, I was lucky enough to find it at a local music store for a very nice price. But I have to say that I enjoy the New Cast Recording more though. Jill Haworth's Sally doesn't hold a candle to Natasha Richardson's. Also, Robactoguy...you were supposed to make me a copy of that Dame Judi Dench "Cabaret" recording ages ago.
