So sad. She embodied the spirit of jazz singing and carried on the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee and Rosemary Clooney.
I love her CD of Rodgers and Hart songs--"This Funny World"--and this jazz version of "For Now" from Avenue Q:

Beyond devastated... I worked with Mary several times right out of college and she was one of the smartest, funniest, most talented performers I have ever met.
Her Waters or March is sublime. As were all her songs and performances. And one of the cabaret performers you really really wanted to listen to tell stories between songs as well because they always framed her songs so beautifully....

I produced it and she was such a treasure and wonderful to work with - very open to suggestions and working with her MD, Richard Rodney Bennett and watching the two of them together was also a treat.
Tragic news.

Sad news indeed.
I worked on a production of BABES in ARMS with Mary Cleere in 1977 in San Francisco. Her rendition of Where or When will stay with me always.
A wonderful woman; such a tragic loss. My heart goes out to her son and all who loved her.
