Cabaret in the Dark Ages

I am under fire for being an activist for cabaret & in fact so much so that I was called “A Wealth of Bitches” in a post by Back Stage critic John Hoglund, & even that would not intimidate me. Did I mention that I’m not concerned with winning a Bistro Award either? Not to mention the unprofessional attacks I’ve withstood from present & former MAC BOD members. They would rather bash me than respond w/positive ideas.

The point must be underscored that as long as MAC wastes its money & energy largely on producing their awards show, trying to get big names (including 2 that didn’t show up like Patti Lupone and Tony Danza) to perform in it, instead of putting the time, money and energy into substantive issues that matter to the community and industry, MAC will remain impotent.

A serious trade organization would spend its money on addressing the industry’s problems first. A MAC Awards show might be useful if the public cared about cabaret but that won’t happen until there is an effective trade association truly working on behalf of the cabaret industry that promotes it beyond asking performers to come in support of ea other. We need to develop an audience. That’s what MAC should be doing. Until then, the cabaret industry will not be perceived as important.

MAC has been our trade org for 20 + yrs & look where we are.

When the tire is bald or blows a flat, it’s time to replace the tire.

Them’s the hard facts. Money is the bottom line. Money well spent that is.

Those of you who know me know that I would much rather be writing in support of any program or concept that furthers the art & business of cabaret. It gives me no pleasure to write what some may view as negative posts but we can’t keep turning a blind eye to MAC’s failings. Give me something to root for & fight for the way I used to fight for MAC when I had faith in MAC. Scott Barbarino writes about new initiatives, but emails them privately. What’s the big secret? Convince me & others publicly that MAC has a handle on the future of cabaret & I’ll be there with bells on. I would like to be hopeful that MAC is generating good ideas as well as ways of reasonably & effectively putting them into practice. It’s time for MAC to put its cards on the table.
