Hello all...

What are the male roles in this show like? I'm finding it difficult to find stuff on the web that's not linked to the movie version. The Complete Cast Recording is very nice but not overly helpful on book stuff. I have an audition coming up for this and wanted to know what parts were like. Any good audition song ideas? I was thinking of something from Rodgers and Hammerstein...

Unfortunately, CALAMITY JANE is not big on male roles.

There's "Wild Bill" Hickock--Jane's sparring partner. (A direct steal from Annie and Frank in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, in my opinion.)

There's also Lt. Danny Gilmartin as the "romantic" role in the secondary love story.

The characters are not exactly three-dimensonial--Hickock blusters and argues with Jane quite a bit until he "discovers" he loves her.

Gilmartin is a cardboard character who has to have good looks and sing a couple of romantic ballads.

Regarding your audition, you may want to consider the obvious similarities to ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and try "My Defenses Are Down" or "They Say It's Wonderful."
