Camelot

Posted: 2/29/04 at 11:33amI would love to see Marin Mazzie or Rebecca Luker as Guenevere, as for Lancelot--I saw Matt Bogart play him at the Arena stage production in DC, and he was increedible, but what about something interesting like Taye Diggs--I heard his voice sounded wonderful in Wicked.. any other thoughts?

Posted: 2/29/04 at 3:48pmI don't think Liam is doing this after all...at least, so I've heard... That's not to say he wouldn't be great. He would be an incredible choice.

In short, there's simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here
In Camelot.
I havent seen Camelot in a LONG time. Ill have to borrow it from my mommy.

Posted: 2/29/04 at 5:39pmI think Rebecca Luker would be perfect as Guenevere... though I'd like to see her in a new musical or at least in a comic role in revival...

Sadly new musicals don't seem to require a woman with Rebecca Luker's talents. Like Christine Andreas, she's fated to be the "Queen of Revivals".
Oh how I wish we had a talent on the scene who could write and original score in the league of say MY FAIR LADY or MAN OF LA MANCHA, where r-e-a-l singing was needed. HAIRSPRAY, RENT and several other shows have pop scores that require pop voices. "Legitimate" singers are found in revivals these days.

Posted: 3/1/04 at 8:57amDolly - I agree with you completely - and as for Guenevere in Camelot - much as I love Rebecca and Marin(both incredibly talented women) - they are both too old to play the role now - it needs to be someone young and fresh (in my opinion). Liam is an interesting choice for Arthur and I'd love to see if he can sing. Brent Barret would be a glorious Lance. But I, to, would like to see more original material (risky stuff) as opposed to so many damned revivals (even if the shows being revived are good - I still want new blood out there!)

Camelot has a great score, a great first scene, a great last scene and the rest is pretty dreary and sort of...well, dull. It isn't unwatchable by any means, but the "there" that is "there" isn't "There".
If Gueneviere doesn't get a bunch of laughs particularly in Act One, then there is something wrong with the director. Lancelot is pretty, but what a stick in the mud.
Morderd and Pellinore are the only continually fun roles.

Posted: 3/1/04 at 10:04amI would love to see some new fresh talent on Broadway. There are a lot of great talented actors/actresses in Nashville, Tn; Texas and Florida (and other areas of the country) that could really shine in some of these rolls.

I'm not sure about Caroline, or Change. The upcoming Spamalot and Jerry Springer the Opera will need them as well as The Light in the Piazza should it go for Broadway. Pop voices are popular now, but there are shows using legit voices out there that are not revivals.

Posted: 3/1/04 at 5:15pmI agree! The story is great, the music is good but it gets a little bogged down and lengthy. Some theaters will cut it down some and that helps.
